You defo should!I don't drink.
The IDF have deliberately killed at least 20 Irish UN soldiers over the years and I don’t by the “killed by mistake” argument. The remainder can be attributable to accidents and deaths at the hand of the South Lebanese army, Hezbollah and various other militias.
This latest attack is no different to what’s gone before. Israel Deliberately targeting UN troops.
It’s not a question of repelling the Israelis more a question of operating under a military leadership structure with a clear mandate. UNIFIL ops are controlled by civilian UN control. They need the ability and ROE to be able to properly defend themselves if attacked. I’m not surprised though that the UN still hasn’t learnt their lessons. Things never change in that org.
As per 1RWF in Gorazde during the Balkans war. The CO found his men under attack by a brigade sized Serb force and when he got on the blower for UN authorisation to use direct force he was told to contact an official at the UN in New York (who was still asleep at the time)! Luckily he had the balls to tell his men to remove their blue berets and fight as British soldiers.

@d34noj c’mon, I’m intrigued - what was so bad about Owen jones statement? You defo should!
Answer the question, please, what is wrong with what he wrote….?
I used the incident in Gorazde as an example of UN bureaucracy and the desire to be seen as doing the right thing actually results in putting their people unnecessarily in harms way.The IDF are not the Serbs, and the Irish are not the British Army of the time.
There is zero chance that UNFIL would ever be allowed to "properly defend themselves if attacked"; to defend themselves properly would mean a military buildup of the kind that would fix Lebanon and make the Israelis follow all the SC resolutions they are in breach of. That should happen of course, but it never will.

The UN have to provide the correctly-sized force on the ground, with a military chain of command in order to do the job in Lebanon or anywhere else in the world where peacekeeping is required, if not then don’t bother, as it’s the peacekeeping force who will become targets and come home in body bags.
Going back to Bosnia and the incident with 1RWF, whilst under attack Their CO (Lt Col Jonathan Riley) took a phone call from the UK PM (John Major) who asked him what the situation was. He replied
'Thirty three of my men have been taken hostage; 100 are in a hide. There are shells falling all around. No one can get to us - and we can't get to anybody. But every man here knows their duty, and they will do it,' said the Colonel.
Then he added: 'You and Mr Rifkind shouldn't try to peacekeep where there is no peace to keep.'
He was 100% right - get those UNIFIl troops out now or they will be killed. IDF are out of control and UNIFIL cannot protect itself so best to get the fk out of didge city.
Sorry I don’t follow? That is funny, you aren't pro-appeasement on the other thread.
