He should of been
Absolutely not. You don't get to run off to another club for a shiny pot of gold at the first chance and be a legend too. For me, he's a Man United legend, which is fair since he gave them all his best years. There is a discussion going on whether Rooney should be classed as a Everton legend
Carragher thinks not
Of the ones that I've seen ...Ball , Harvey, Kendall , Labone, Royle, Latchford, Southall, Steven, Mountfield, Ratcliffe, Reid, Sheedy, Stevens, Sharp, Heath , Gray, Kanchelskis , Baines.fair enough mate
so who do you think were the really good ones in blue shirts?
I agree with a lot of that but I think he would have become frustrated at being a teenager carrying a team on his back which he would have been doing, can you name another teenager doing that with any team anywhere? Howard Kendall is mentioned by some fans as the best manager we have ever had do they subtract his two later efforts as manager when they come to that conclusion. While playing for Everton? He was BIG news when he first started playing for us, mostly because he was a man in a kids body, he was far better than anybody his age, and better than many who were more experienced. He developed past that though at United, he became a more complete player. He lost his raw edge in my opinion, but he developed well past where he was with us.
When he returned he was on the wane, so was no longer the player he was.
Ginola was a hell of a player, but not when he was with us, as was Gascoigne. I'd hold them in the same manner as Rooney, and I wouldn't have them in the conversation of 'legend'
If we are to judge players at Everton, they need to be judged on their time at Everton, which is why for me he shouldn't be judged amongst the best players we have had, nor should he be called a legend.
Don't get me wrong, Rooney was an absolutely unreal talent, I just dont think he realised his top level, which is what most judge him on, while he was with us.
Now, another maybe contentious opinion of mine, is that if Rooney had stayed with us, he'd have been better than he eventually became. He lost his rawness while at United, something I think he'd have kept with us, but that's another argument for another day.
Man Utd legend. Everton legend That's reserved for the greats like Ball. Kendall, Royle, Latchford etc
FixedOf the ones that I've seen ...Ball , Harvey, Kendall , Labone, Royle, Latchford, Southall, Steven, Mountfield, Ratcliffe, Reid, Sheedy, Stevens, Sharp, Heath , Gray, Kanchelskis, Hibbert, Baines.
Branthwaite can join that list if he continues to progress. Lukaku was close .
All have shown more ability and produced more in an Everton shirt than Rooney did in his time here.
Is Gerard Pique a Man Utd legend?
Antony Gordon did next to nothing on the field while he was here, I don’t think his fee saved us from bankruptcy but did help with not getting any more points taken off us.Is that worthy of legendary status ?
You could argue that Antony Gordon saved us from bankruptcy but that in no way that rat faced bell is a legend.
Rooney was a world class player…..just for another club
