I think him not playing for Spain probably has quite a big effect. You can imagine if he had been playing regularly for Spain then he would definitely have gone to a CL club by now. Perhaps also the other way around, but he could easily have been a much bigger player than he is.

Spain have some outstanding midfield players, it hasnt helped that hes played on the wings for a long period either.

Its not really a huge issue, when you cant get into the best team in the World, its not the worst thing ever.

Im actually with Toccy on this, hes good enough to have at least made the squad on occasions, their is an ethnic undertone in Spanish football and being Basque has been telling for him IMO. On the opposite side i would imagine not playing for Spain wouldnt be as big deal for him being Basque.
