Is it time for us to replace Howard?

Contracted until 2018...

It's a bit of a fear of the unknown for me really. There are absolutely loads of terrible goalkeepers out there and we might accidentally end up with one. But Roberto does always go on about being brave, so maybe it's time to be brave.

In an ideal world, yea, we'd get a better keeper.
Howard's decent like, but where is he on your list of priorities ?

Say you had 10 million ( or whatever you might need to replace him), and no more, to spend in January. Would you

  • Buy a new keeper
  • Get a new centre half
  • Find a new ( left ? ) winger
  • Add a new defensive midfielder
  • Pick up a new playmaker / no 10 or
  • Get an up and coming unknown striker
Before the window opens, I'm going to create a poll for this, then at least when in March or April people say "ffs Bobby, it was obvious we needed a new <insert position here>" we'll be able to see if they thought that pre-transfer window.

This isn't meant as a go at you by the way mate, but people at the club, principally Martinez, have to make choices. There is no huge pot of money for us to dib our hands in, so we have to prioritise things.

I'd be happier if he saved off his beard though.

I understand what your saying but every great team or even teams that win trophies have a top keeper who gets them out of a game they should have lost or drawn by making match winning saves, just feel his errors are outweighing his match winning saves and have been for a while.

He's been a good player for us but if you want to progress you can't afford to be sentimental. It's like Hibbert and Osman, okay they've been good, sold players for us over the years and can do a solid job when needed but if we have the lofty ambitions that we are supposed to, players like that shouldn't be around the first team really. I can think of at least 5 keepers I'd rather realistically have.

Begovic, Marshall, Matt Ryan, Jasper Cillessen, kasper schmeichel

Aye, I agree with you, just trying to put it into persepective that's all.
If all our players were fit and in form our first choice would probably look something like

Howard
Coleman Jagielka Stones Baines
Barry McCarthy
Mirallas Barkley Pienaar
Lukaku
Granted some people might argue about whether Eto'o, Naismith or McGeady might start, but that's a bloody good team.

Where are the obvious weaknesses ? Probably Pienaar ( based on age as much as anything ) and Howard ( based on him being decent rather than top class ) in that order. If we could get better first choices than those two in, without losing either Pienaar or Howard, I'd be made up. It's then a case of do you want to strengthen the squad rather than strengthen the first choicers. Come the Summer Martinez will have choices to make, I doubt we'll change much in January.

Howard is past his best - If you look at Lloris he make important save and wins Spurs matches.

We had to score a world class goal to beat him today.

For the first goal, Howard should of pushed the ball out of play for a corner (he put it in Eriksens path).

For the second goal, Howard should have saved that poor effort.

On thursday, I expected him to save all the shots he did (95% of them were straight forward save, which were at him most of the time).
