Nice one…..amagtoff…..
So what do the DUP do now Pete?

Do they enter Government and work the Protocol (accelerating Irish Unification) or do they refuse to serve under a SF FM (accelerating Irish Unification).

In the event that Boris decides to unilaterally break an International treaty which will of course result in outrage against the UK (accelerating Irish Unity).

Pete, how would you help navigate your fellow Tories out of this trifle..?

I don’t know mate. For me it’s a matter for the people of NI and no one else, neither the U.K. nor ROI. in terms of the border issue I would have told the EU to do one or put it between ROI and EU (and see how that feels). I suggested way back when, that a half a billion pounds could have put an automatic system in place but neither the U.K. nor EU have done anything. In all honesty I think the U.K. is trying to be pragmatic and that the EU are making up more rules as we go along. I would advise Boris to just extend arrangements and keep extending them until common sense dawns on the Eu. I also think that the ROI have attempted to use this situation for their own ends. At the end of the day this is all about what is best for ALL the people in NI…….

Pray tell.

And your workings.

If you will indulge me I have taken this part of my earlier post from the EU In or Out thread as it is more appropriate to this one.

I would like a different type of border poll of non-nationalist primary and secondary processors of agricultural goods, exporters of other goods from NI well as hauliers to see if they would prefer to be held up at the ROI border or continue to get their goods seamlessly to a potential market of 500 million tariff free.

In 2018 total exports from NI (not just food)

EU total (62.53%)
UK (34.68)
Ireland (16.82%)
United States (5.78%)
Canada (2.63%)
Germany (2.63%)
France (2.1%)

Almost 2/3 to the EU !!

In 2019 exports from NI to EU was worth €6.9 BN. With the Protocol they can continue to avail of tariff free, customs free passage to ROI (NI's biggest single export market at €2.4Bn) and on to the mainland of the EU.

Can you imagine the impact on NI if the Protocol is scrapped. The system is already creaking according to NI TV programmes.

Good summing up of the subject.

A few points from the last page's posts (I was starting a new boxset)

Pete, a hard border would see the shovels come out and the guns being dug up. That's the worst route to take.

Bluerover, there's no point trying to use logic with these people. They would literally rather starve and stay "British".

The DUP cannot soften on the Protocol because they'll lose the orange vote which means they lose their jobs (good Christians who don't give a toss for anyone but themselves, apparently. They will therefore stamp their feet and take their ball home, leaving us in limbo AGAIN.

Johnson has promised them something though. You can tell by Donaldson's wee smug face. I have a feeling he's going to play chicken with his 'oven ready' deal with no one being the winner.

It's a feckin' mess. There is no solution palatable to all which has been obvious to a blind man from the moment Brexit was mentioned. We were always going to be the cannon fodder.

Time and demographics are the only real solution (and there's no guarantee that the South would vote to allow those head-the-balls join them.

We have seen those smug looks on Donaldson’s face before.

And Paisley. And Dodds. And Sammy Tache.

Johnson always end uo chucking them under the bus.

Very true. Very true. I'm a particular fan of the Dodds' apoplectic head wobble.

When you think of the absolute comedy of errors these boyos have treated us to, it's hard to believe that they can stand with a straight face, take their pay, refuse to work and claim it's everyone else's fault. Honestly, you couldn't write it.... and all because Cameron tried to stop votes bleeding to Farage.

Re-read the posts. I mis-read Pete's comment about the border so ignore my comment and I apologise. I was very tired. (Although your idea of a border between EU countries is madder ?)

Edit: forgot to tag @peteblue . God I'm sh*t at this! ?

The partitioned 6 counties is two-thirds of a province in Ireland, nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks Khalekan. Coming from Susan McKay, this is a damning indictment of Donaldson from a lady of the Unionist tradition.

Ostensibly, Donaldson is taking a stand against the Brexit protocol, which unionists call the ‘border in the Irish Sea’. He claims Northern Irish shoppers now have to pay more than their counterparts in the rest of the UK – and that this is causing hardship and costing the local economy £2.5m per day. In reality, research shared by Stormont’s Department of Economy suggests the total grocery cost is currently 8% lower in Northern Ireland than the rest of the UK, while the NI economy is outperforming the UK's.

The NI economy is outperforming the rest of the UK because it is still able to access EU markets with no tariffs.
