There is another election coming up for the Northern Ireland Assembly, this may cause a major shift in politics here. The First Minister is nominated by the largest party of the largest grouping within the Assembly. If more MLAs nominate as nationalist then Sinn Fein will be asked to nominate a First Minister. If that happens then we will see a fundamental change in Northern Ireland politics.
This will be the most interesting election in our history, but it will only be the most interesting until the next one.

Unionists are in free fall, if they pull Stormont down I think it's finished.
Joint authority till a border poll.

Not 100% right that Caolam. Part of the NI Act (Section 16C para 6) over-rides the St Andrew’s Agreement in that the largest party can nominate itself as First Minister even if not from the largest community designation. Given that SF look nailed on to be the largest party, this is why various Unionists have called for the St Andrew’s Agreement to be upheld and if not then they will refuse to share office.

Every chance that Nationalists will be the largest community denomination anyway with both demographics and anti-Brexit feeling.

If Stormont goes down over the Protocol (or a SF First Minister) then totally agree that it will never be resurrected.

A very respected Unionist journalist Alex Kane predicted a Border Poll as ‘likely within 10 years’.

For anyone not familiar with his work, he is one journo I highly recommend for a Unionist perspective of all things NI.

Thanks for the clarification. I am not sure the SDLP won’t take votes away from Sinn Fein this time. It could be decided on which of the two big parties haemorrhage the least votes. Tactical voting may well carry the day.

I think the potential of having a Nationalist FM will see enough voters mark their X for SF this time, whether that be from latent voters or the SDLP it’s hard to tell.

Mad to think the DUP will have inflicted such damage on themselves this time over their support for a hard Brexit. Future historians will mark that down as a key factor in swinging the vote to instigate re-unification, all because they threw everything behind Boris Johnson’s empty words.

I think the possibility of a nationalist FM will certainly have an influence on which way people vote but I have the feeling Colm Eastwood is starting to appeal to voters in a way the SDLP have not been able for some time. The same could be said for the UUP.
I think the DUP have been making colossal mistakes for years, I would go all the way back to Paisley’s Ulster Says No days when that started the view that they were a party that would not negotiate or be prepared to move on issues. They were dinosaurs. However they had the sectarian headcount to keep them in place. As times change they need to change but the Ulster Says No theme prevents them from moving from their entrenched position. I had hoped that Jeffrey Donaldson was more politically aware than the rest of them but it seems that may have been a false hope.

Agree with that Caolam, think both Eastwood and Beattie seem like people who could work together and get things done.

Donaldson has been disappointing although are the DUP really any different from SF in that the leader will always be directed and controlled by those in the background.

Amazing short sightedness...

I dont think it's that Colm soundbite Eastwood is appealing to people more that S.F have made a mess of it in Derry.
