Poots had nowhere to go here. When the DUP pushed out Foster they handed full control to SF to demand the implementation of the Irish Act or face a snap election.

The DUP know that after this term it is likely there will never again be a Unionist First Minister and if they would be prepared to play deputy is up for debate.

Poots tried to buy time to undo the damage of the Protocol but in the end it seems twenty is plenty for the DUP.

Wonder who takes over. I have heard Sammy Wilson being mentioned by some. Can you imagine the entertainment value if that was to happen?

They had a correspondent on C4 News yesterday who was saying that beyond the noise generated by the DUP many protestants in NI are thinking the previously unthinkable, that NI becoming part of a United Ireland in the EU is preferable to the current situation and ultimately inevitable. And I can well see it coming. Boris and Chums are so focused on England alone and people there are seeing the impact yet various chummy ministers say its not that big an issue.

Boris as usual is trying to bluff his way out of this and its not going to work, He can have his brexit but I suspect NI and Scotland will be lost in the process
sooner or later.

Very few people want a united Ireland in the sense of us just consuming N Ireland. The debate has already begun about what a shared Island woukd be like. A new way of politics and respect for a broad church of beliefs and views.

New flags/anthem etc. If people feel British that has to be respected and a way to include that in a shared Ireland is so so important.

The planning needs to be (and is) done long before we actually begin even thinking about referendums and so on. Everyone needs to know what it will look like and their place in it. A brexit type referendum would be a disaster.

I'm actually quite excited thinking about what a new Ireland could be. There would have to be a lot of financial assistance from the EU, UK and I imagine the US as well as partners in the goid friday agreement.

It's really the only logical way forward.

Indeed, should leave the old rhetoric behind. And embrace new language round this subject, My bad!

Northern Ireland doesn’t sit comfortably within the United Kingdom. We were fine when Westminster wasn forced to take an interest in us.
The fundamentalist thinking of some of our right wing unionist leaders doesn’t belong in a modern country hence the introduction of equal rights in marriage, abortion and now an Irish language act by Westminster over their heads. There is some unrest in the more militant loyalist groups but there seems to be confusion as to whom to direct their anger against. I think when the dust settles you may see a more pragmatic unionist voice emerging who will recognise the inevitability of a United Ireland and who will start a dialogue in regard to where unionism sits within the context of the split from the UK. I can see some violence on the streets but I can’t see a sustained terrorist campaign by loyalists as they wouldn’t appear to have an end game. I suppose they could go for re-partition but would Britain want to be responsible for a more fundamentalist one party statelet. Can’t see that happening, Our next Assembly election will be interesting, we could have a Sinn Fein First Minister, that would be a major re-adjustment, would the DUP collapse Stormont to prevent that happening, would the UUP merge with the DUP to get the votes to retain the First Minister post.
If we do get a Sinn Fein First Minister they will call for a border poll at the earliest opportunity, if NI get a border poll Scotland will push for a referendum.
We are living in interesting times.
