Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

There are 3 protagonists in this matter.

1) UK
2) ROI
3) European Union

A customs union, border checks, and above all tariffs, are only in the interests of one of the above.

I'll let you guess which one....
Nope, there are only 2.

EU and Ireland are on the same side - a fact which seems lost on most pro-Brexit people, or they choose to ignore it.

This is what happens when you leave the EU - you are on your own.

The U.K. has said it does not want and will not put in a hard border, and there is nothing that the EU or anyone else can do to insist we have one, so your journey into NI will be as per today. However if the EU and Ireland wish to have a hard border then you will have more difficulties but at least you will know who to complain to. Have you ever noticed that whenever the EU do not wish to do something it is described as being ‘impossible’. This doesn’t mean that something is actually impossible, just that they do not wish to do it......

You don't think Britian will mind people smuggling goods and avoiding tax or EU nationals entering the Republic and driving North and unto ferries across to Britian.

Have you ever noticed that the majority of people in Northern Ireland wanted to stay in the EU and the majority of the people the republic want NI to stay in the EU but noooooo. a bunch of auld fellas in Sunderland fell for Farages Bull and hey presto, the Island of Ireland has to turn it's self inside out to accommodate London.

why do you insist on calling it the Belfast Agreement alongside all unionists when everyone else in the world calls it the Good Friday Agreement? genuine question.

Pete the UK have caused this by voting for Brexit. They are changing the status quo not Ireland or the EU.

Also I believe that the WTO would force the UK to have border controls if that's the route you went down

Not sure tbh. Just learnt it as that for GCSE and it stuck in think lol

Well hardly a surprise coming from the "extra £350m a week for the NHS" man....

As recently as November last year, the Foreign Secretary told the House of Commons: "There can be no return to a hard border. There can be no hard border.

"That would be unthinkable, and it would be economic and political madness".

In February 2016, ahead of the EU referendum, Mr Johnson promised the Irish border would be "absolutely unchanged".

Oh well hey Boris..

Boris the opportunistic long term europhile and EU enthusiast who turned brexit leader for a shot at ousting Cameron Vs Jeremy the staunch Eurosceptic who prior to 2016 hadn't voted for a single pro Europe measure in his close to thirty years as an MP, but thought it was good for his career to claim he had underwent a Damascus road conversion as there were votes in it.

And people wonder why lots of us didn't know what we were voting for.....

Hmm no they aren't. Entitled to your view but I disagree. Why would irish businesses who export want tariffs on their goods to make them more expensive?

Why would British exporters want tariffs on their goods making them more expensive?

It's in neither interest except from the recipients of tariffs.

Hmm neither would, which enforces the point that Brexit is disastrous for both sides of the border.

The EU are negotiating with the UK government over Brexit. As one of the remaining members, Ireland is represented by the EU in the negotiations.

That's why there are only 2 protagonists, not 3 as you claim. The UK is out on its own now and will become more isolated in the years to come. If that's what you want then fine, but I'd wager that most people will come to regret this decision over time.

Unless ireland have given up their right to be a sovereign nation then there are clearly 3.

Britain won't be imposing any customs so why do the EU keep raising the issue? It's almost like they have an agenda at play.

OK I'll break it down for you.

There are nations that are in the EU and nations that are not in the EU.

The EU represents the nations that are in it in the negotiations which includes Ireland. Ireland is not conducting separate negotiations with the UK government over Brexit. It's quite simplistic really.

If you can't understand why leaving the single market means that there has to be customs then there is no point in discussing it.

The UK chose to leave, they weren't kicked out. But yeah, its all the EUs fault and they have an agenda, blah, blah, blah.
