I think they view an anti Brexit coalition as being much too green for their liking. They are starting to believe their own hype following recent gains.

I wonder how Emma Pengelly feels.

She is the sacrificial lamb here.....the moment the DUP and their allies in the paramilitary Ulster Defence Association bullied Mr. Aitken into doing a U turn on fielding a. candidate from the UUP, a Sinn Fein and SDLP “non aggression” pact in Belfast became inevitable.

So in order to “secure” Deputy Dodds won in North Belfast, Pengelly was thrown to the wolves in South Belfast,

But as we have said many times over this past year, there is a great chance Dodds was going to be unseated anyway.

Let’s hope he is :)

Yep, the DUP have rolled the dice big time to get Dodds over the line but at best that must be 55/45 chance of happening. Hopefully disgruntled Remain UUP voters will give Finucane some support.

Pengelly is a goner.

This election is starting to look like the start of the end of the United Kingdom. Scotland, provided the Scottish Nationalist Party poll well, will press for a second referendum on independence. It is possible that Northern Ireland could return more nationalist MPs than unionist which will increase the pressure for a border poll.
This is going to be the most interesting election for sometime.

It is brilliant to see parties crossing traditional lines to campaign for what is best for NI as a whole.

When people voted for Brexit, do we think they knew that the UK actually has a land border with an EU country, or is it something they just realised afterwards?

It is the latter.

And what’s worse, very few cared then or care now.....if “get Brexit done” means getting out of NI very few Brexiters would give a monkey’s cuss.

The DUP are squealing like stuck pigs over the anti Brexit alliance which is threatening their seats in North and South Belfast.

As usual with them it is everyone else’s fault, completely in denial that they brought this situation about themselves, first by charging headlong into support Brexit from the getgo and secondly by acting in cahoots with loyalist paramilitaries to bully the UUP out of contesting North Belfast.

N.B.....just hearing a DUP MP is not defending his seat.

I wonder if Big Arfer will be tempted to put her name forward.

Never crossed my mind. Nor many others over here. Once it dawned on me, I have foolishly tried to get an answer from the leavers about what, exactly, we can do about it.

Far from convinced this latest solution will work, unless over time, it becomes virtually redundant in operational reality.

That's a shame. A rare decent and normal sounding unionist voice. Looks like a DUP shoe-in now doesnt it?

If both the UUP and Alliance field candidates they are a certainty.

One imagines the UUP would have a very good chance if Alliance stood down but they have painted themselves into a corner with their self defeating, holier than thou “no pact” stance.

I don't think geography is a strong point with most of them.

They seem to think that imported products arrive magically in their local stores and that Brexit won't change this in any way regarding availability or price.

Very encouraging reading for Arlene, Nigel et al!!

Britons are more interested in getting their way on Brexit than preserving Northern Ireland’s place within the UK
Northern Ireland tends to be far from the mind of the average mainland Brit. When it does gain public attention, it’s often for the wrong reasons. In recent years fate has made it a prominent part of the Brexit saga.
Now new YouGov polling exposes the extent of the weaknesses in the link between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
When asked how much they care about what happens in Northern Ireland, four in ten mainland Brits (41%) say they don’t care very much or at all.

Given this fact, it is no surprise to see that an identical figure of 41% say they wouldn’t be bothered if Northern Ireland left the UK. A further 41% would be upset if it broke away, while only a minority of 9% would be actively be pleased to see them go.

Given the choice between having their preferred outcome on Brexit and Northern Ireland staying in the Union, a majority of 58% chose the former and only 18% the latter.

I would say those figures are way off.

The figures are way higher than that.

About 90% of your average English Brexiters would ditch 6 of 9 in a heartbeat IMO

I know literally zero English people, Remainer or Brexiter, who cares about NI and whether or not it stays politically connected to England at all.
