Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

My bad, I was just relating the way the story was told to me.

No problem - historically many pro-unionists that found themselves in the south of Ireland after partition moved to GB and vice versa, some nationalists moved out of the north into the south of Ireland.

Ireland never tried to occupy any of the 6 counties, although apparently many nationalists were expecting the Irish army to occupy Derry, or at least the Nationalist bogside, after Bloody Sunday.

The Balkans poses a very complex set of issues in relation to ethnic and religious identity.

I have to laugh at the DUP (once again)

For several years they ranted on and on about how “technological solutions” existed and should be used along the British imposed border in Ireland.

But now the border is going to be in the Irish Sea their whining in parliament mentions nowt about “technological solutions”.

Instead they raise the same concerns the people living on the border or ferrying goods from one part of Ireland to the other......about identity and red tape which would not be necessary if this Brexit madness was binned.

Won't happen as they will not take the Oath of Allegiance.

It would be outrageous popcorn but would be the end of SF.

No it wouldn’t.

If Sinn Fein dropped their abstentionist policy in the morning it would cost them very few votes.

Of all the various reasons people vote for Sinn Fein, abstentionism is well down the list.

And those it did cost them would most likely be compensated for by people who do not wish to waste their votes giving them the nod.

I would love to see this myth that SF would lose a lot of support by going into Westminster put to the test.

I have posted about this on here many times before.

Recognising the Dail in the 1990s was supposed to harm them in the South.....but they have grown their vote continuously since then.

Going into Stormont to “administer British rule” was also meant to signal their demise in the North.....instead they have held the joint Premiership in 6 of 9 this past decade and more.

They need to get into Westminster......not just for the numbers game but to put forward the views of the native Irish people in NI who are fed up to the eye teeth with the DUP claiming to “speak for the people of Northern Ireland”.

All it takes is for them to cross their fingers and mutter a few meaningless words :)

Usually I’d agree with you Khal but I think, if SF take their seats, they’d lose a ton of support, it’s nothing like Stormont or Leinster house. Don’t get me wrong, I think it would be great if they did but it’ll never happen.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion, Ruari.

But you know I passionately disagree with you :)

(about them losing a "ton" of votes that is....I agree they won't take their seats, that requires a level of strategic thinking they are incapable of making these days :( )

@davek ........This is a great post on Slugger O’Toole......nails the DUP to a tee.

I might as well add my tuppence worth too..No surprises here.Where to begin with the DUP? The whole world seemingly knows of their bile at this moment in time and that is through their own self-promotion.Everyone else has stood back and allowed them space enough to cook this horrific stew.

This charmless bunch of holier- than -thou arch-hypocrites have been the source of bitterness, acrimony and plain bad governance for many years. No question about it.We’d all be in a much better place if they had never existed. I can’t think of a single positive thing to say about them .They have held us back socially and culturally , seeded unnecessary bitterness right across our entire community , unionist, nationalist , muslim , women and gay and even brought their infestation right onto the benches of Westminster to further spawn their hatred , boorishness , gracelessness and plain negativity . In this they have succeeded in also dividing the UK.

Now that we should all know of them intimately and their links with some nefarious creatures in their background, this is not the time to blinker our own eyes or our own media. It is time to shine an even brighter light on them.

Great piece.

Horrendous people. The McBride book 'Burned' apparently skewers them. No wonder they hate him.

Well, the metaphorical starting pistol is about to be fired and Big Arfer is already panicking..

She is whipping up hysteria about the new Ulster Unionist Party, Mr. Aitken, saying he will run candidates in all 18 NI seats.

Which, in her own words, will hand Deputy Dodds’s seat to Sinn Fein.

:)

She knows that even with a clear run at North Belfast, the Deputy is going to be hard pushed to hold his seat against current Belfast Lord Mayor and North Belfast SF candidate, Mr. John Finucane.

With Brexit not yet settled you would think this would be run on a Leave v Remain basis which could spell big trouble for the DUP.

But because of Johnson's deal, instead what we may see is the DUP vote consolidating as they will whip up hysteria during the election campaign that the Union is under severe threat, which always takes priority with their voters.

Either way we are in for a period of prolonged polarisation as the 2 main parties slug it out yet again. Thanks Johnson.
