Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

It has been given a cautious welcome in general given how strongly Remain they are.

Behind closed doors they will of course be delighted that the DUP have been shown their arse and that London is explaining why NI going forward really isn’t a fully paid up member of the union.

Frankly it’s hilarious that the DUP (Dodds) is demanding the GFA is upheld and that they are flat refusing a straight out majority vote in Stormont.

The Foster woman was close to tears.

And I almost choked on my tea when she said “the DUP are the guardians of the Northern Ireland economy”.

lol

I wont comment on the nuance of the political stuff, cos I am pig ignorant of it. But having Irish family by marriage, and without wanting to cause offence, my view from a laptop in Bristol would be that the mood of normal folk over there would be one of "It kinda works, nothing has actually changed", meaning any traction the lunatic fringe might try to exploit would be drowned out by a chorus of indifference.
You never cause offence by asking questions and trying to find out. Personally that is the beauty of the Current Affairs section for me as I get to read and debate things that I rarely would get to in my daily grind.

Anyway, I do take your point re indifference but you must remember NI is a zero sum mentality in that ‘if they are happy then it must be bad for us’. Similar to what you see from certain posters here, there will be anger despite not knowing why they are angry but just that they have been told to be angry.

An open majority vote in Stormont will never vote to remove the deal. The second largest Unionist party (UUP) are openly pro Remain never mind the Nationalist parties plus the small middle ground.

My personal take is that the 4 year voting bit was only included to create the resemblance for the DUP that they are still in control. They needed something to sell to their hardline support who are in denial about the demographic tide that is now lapping up on Northern Irish shores.

I heard that guy who is running for UUP leader talking to Nolan this morning and he is nailing his colours to the Remain mast.

The DUP has never been more isolated.

And then next month the RHI Inquiry report comes out ..... :)

Tory after Tory coming on and saying “Boris got rid of the Backstop”.

Gove is saying it right now on TV.

And I suppose that is true.

Because they have bypassed the Backstop and gone straight to the protocols that the Backstop was designed to avert until better systems came in.

In other words, the insurance policy that was the Backstop is now merely policy.

Not a good time to be a DUPer, Monday will see the introduction of same sex marriage and abortion laws. More of their dinosaur rules up in smoke. (There is a pun there)

because the other major party, Sinn Fein which has almost as many seats as them, refuse to enter the chamber in Westminster and put forward the views of the majority of NI citizens

Not sure where you live, but you're presumably Irish. Do you, and others think that Sinn Fein, should swallow their pride, take their seats in Westminster and influence from within, or should they stick to having nothing to do with parliament ?

No, I am from Garston, but my people are Irish and I consider myself a Mick all right :)

And I have been banging on for years now, on this forum and others, that Sinn Fein need to drop this outdated, self defeating policy and take their seats.

Having read the text I'd be fairly happy with it if it ever gets to see the light of day. Sounds like the Irish government are as well.

This would ensure no borders reappearing anywhere on the island and and no tariff differentials being applied. It provides that cross border trade can continue unhindered as it is now which will be a relief to many people. The best bit is that it has the look of semi-permanency as it will not be replaced by a subsequent deal between the EU and the UK unlike the previous backstop. I could not see there ever being the required majority in Stormont to overturn it.

That's all pie in the sky stuff though as there is likely to be resistance to it on the ground from the unionist side if it ever comes to pass, which it probably won't.

Great summary. Agree completely.

Exactly, they are now for the first time ever in a minority position and grasping at anything to have their voices heard.

I'm ashamed to say I find myself almost being defined by my distaste for the DUP as anything else. I had some horrible experiences for a while growing up and now, as an adult, to see the likes of Sammy and Dodds wheeled out for ridicule is pure theatre.

To then have varadkar, coveney and a succession of others come on and basically come across as nice, normal, intelligent, liberal human beings is priceless!

Mr. Varadkar has been a star in all of this.

I just wish my grandparents were alive to see the border shifted from Killeen to the Isle of Man :)
