Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

I've no idea who you are, let alone have an agenda against you. You made some comments, and I responded to one specific thing you said. I excised the rest of your post because it made it clearer what I was responding to.

The rest of your post was just guff anyway. Saying meaningless things like "most people I know don't want the Irish to suffer" whilst supporting policies and politicians that will lead to exactly that result isn't exactly portraying you in a great light (reminds me of those domestic abusers that question their victim "why do you make me do this?").

It also means that some people you know do want the Irish to suffer, which throws up questions about the circles you move in.
You know what. I started this conversation by saying how much I like the Irish and would love them to be part of the union again. It was just a personal thing with no great expectation of it ever becoming a reality and was in response to an off the cuff post Roydo made.

In response I've had nothing but absolute rebuttal culminating in crap like this. To say I'm sorry I bothered is an understatement.

I'll take comfort in the fact that the Irish I've met over the years, including the extensive family I have over there, are not representative of some of you guys on this forum.

Coveney as Foreign Affairs Minister is excellent.

More solid interventions today:

Simon Coveney said only the DUP were supporting Mr Johnson’s Brexit problematic proposals and if there was a legitimate reason provided by the British, he’d support another extension to avoid No Deal.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, made it clear the Irish Government and the EU are currently at an impasse with the British on Brexit, despite the UK’s leave date rapidly approaching.

“There’s only one political party supporting Boris Johnson’s proposal as the basis of a deal,” Minister Coveney said.

“Nobody else is and that’s because there’s real problems with it.
“I hope the British Prime Minister will recognise that…We will be constructive in trying to help that.
“This isn’t about politics and personalities or political parties, it’s about complex problems, that need to be solved with real solutions that stand up to scrutiny.”

It’s a learning process I’m afraid......

The south trade 66% with the UK .... if I think back Labour wanted Ireland to have a single market customs deal now they rebuke that ...... it's worse than Mays deal really?
QT last night one brexiteer in the audience unify Ireland and let the irish brexiteers repatriate in the UK with compensation -
it's really getting stupid - The EU raised this issue they should sort it out......

Joe,

First part of your post - you are not accurate with that trade figure.

As regards Beef, we export 90% of our production of which 55% was bought by the UK in 2018.

As regards Dairy, 26% to UK 34% to other EU and 40% to other international (Third) countries.

A little known fact is that we import 33% of all the beef that the UK exports!! That is a sizeable market for your beef producers, primary and secondary to risk losing.

As for the second part, Roydo raised this yesterday, but a number of us have explained why that is just not a runner with the people of the ROI for a number of reasons.

@davek et al.

Thus is how English interviewers should be holding Brexiter toes to the fire instead of just letting Johnson and Farage spout their lies without much scrutiny.

Sensational stuff from Mark Carruthers at BBC NI.

I thought the DUP man’s head was going to explode.

Completely schooled by that interviewer.

The way the DUP have talked up and then talked down the Irish Sea border underlines what chancers they are.

Believe it or not Dave, that interviewee (Jeffrey Donaldson) is likely to replace Arlene as leader later this year.

Arlene should very much be seen now as the DUP mudguard for all things Brexit.
I thought the political class we have over this side of the Irish Sea was poor, but that lot are a disgrace. The sullen look on Donaldson's face when being asked basic questions to hold him to account screams 'entitlement'. The horrible get.

His is a well known political rat having part negotiated the GFA then walked away calling it a betrayal. In that respect he is in very good company with the current crop of Tories.
