Unfortunately some of the rhetoric diminishes what may be valid concerns......
Agreed Pete. Arlene knows that supporting Brexit against the wishes of the Northern Irish populace has accelerated the path to Irish unification.

Her “blood red lines” are purely territorial now. There is no consideration of anything bar maintaining NI in the U.K.

In fairness that's their raison d'être. However, the fact that 10 nutcase DUP MPs can hold this country to ransom is a sad indictment on the performance of British politicians since Cameron got in. He and May have gambled and failed in the referendum and the GE. This woman didn't even want to leave the EU before the vote was taken.

That’s what surprised me in the Tory responses on social media to the DUP threats.

Didn’t they realise what they had jumped into bed with?

Is it just me or is the idea of the DUP calling it "Blood Red Lines" frankly disgusting?

Northern Ireland has moved on yet the supposed biggest party pander like this to the lowest common denominator?!

It's like nothing has changed for the unionists in a century. They don't like democracy or frankly anything that doesn't go their way. And when it does all that comes out is "No, No, No" with the accompanying threat of mass violence".

You even have old back of the bus Arlene saying that if the people voted to unify with the South then she'd leave! I mean, she's the leader and there's an accepted democratic process for it. How can she look anyone in the face and say well if she loses a vote she'll take her ball home!

Horrible party.

Indeed....

Unionist politicians have failed their voters completely. They ignore the sweeping demographic and political change happening around them and hark back to their bygone days.

It is King Kanute with a sash.

I think all rational people should be disgusted by the use of the term ‘blood red lines’.......

You still have to bring people with you, clumsy and obvious attempts such as the current EU stance really don’t help the process......

The EU offered the backstop which any economist would have leapt at. To remain in the customs union whilst still in the U.K. should have been the dream scenario for an Irish Unionist. Their acceptance of that would have allowed Westminster to have agreed an exit with the EU.

She has never once articulated how NI is better off outside the EU.

She is representing a minority position and her misguided blind loyalty to Westminster regardless of electorate opinion will prove to be seismic in constitutional terms.

Her point is not to argue a benefit of being outside of the EU, but for the benefit of being within the U.K. Not being able to see that means never understanding. If she represents a minority position then no doubt it will be changed at the ballot box at the next election......

This is not about economics. This is about their beliefs and identity. Just like Gibraltar, which voted massively in favour of being in the EU, they would rather be part of the U.K.........

I do see her argument Pete and it is purely to hold NI within the U.K.

The DUP can’t gain here at all. They know a Nationalist tide is coming and that their actions in advocating Brexit against the wishes of Ulster is galvanising Nationalist sentiment. And to be fair, it was needed.

If the DUP decide to try and topple May then it opens the door to a Corbyn government which will be pro-Irish unification.

Arlene has unwittingly accelerated Irish politics by 25 years.

Perhaps, and if it is the will of the people then so be it. But don’t forget that the unionists in NI or a future United Ireland, will also be part of that island and will have to be accommodated, and not just have their noses rubbed in it.........
