The guy was caravaning with the paramilitary leader that just helped organized what went down in the last week. It's different on so many levels, but you heard something somewhere.

You know.
Is it really a guarantee that killing this guy will stop the people he was leading from carrying out the attacks they were already planning? Because it feels like really it's the opposite and that they are going to retaliate and be more dangerous.

I mean it's good this guy is dead but maybe not worth what comes next.

He was an idiot being in Baghdad after the embassy raid, it was too obvious, why wasn't he in Tehran at Iran's military HQ god knows.
He was known for being quite 'overt' in his leadership: selfies with fighters in Syria; multiple trips to meet supporters in Iraq; meetings near or at the front.

His whereabouts weren't kept 'secret' (in the typical sense) and I'm sure the Americans, amongst other powers, were quite aware of his position - in most cases.

Therefore, I suspect that because of his position in the Iranian hierarchy (quasi-political and military roles) he felt that he was untouchable from attack.

What he highlights is that Arabs are not particulary a nation, more like upper category and they are terrible at fighting (lost Israel war even united, were sleeping quiet under Ottomans for centuries) Iran on the hand has always been independent and strong empire, fantastic at art of war too. As soon as US sets foot on Farsi land they are in huge trouble IMO, no way out of the swamp
be crackers to even try and step foot in Iran , it has a big army , decent rockets ect and the layout of the country would become a nightmare for anybody invading.
suspect they would be better off letting it collapse from within by upping the stakes economically , there has been some discontent internally lately, there would be a very heavy price if its boots on the ground, hope Johnson keeps us out of it.

Can't see that happening. Donald will threaten to pull the trade deal.
If you hold any regard for the FO statement, I don't think we're overly pleased with their actions, and I suspect that we weren't informed of details beforehand.

Or, at least we were told very late on as there seems to be a lukewarm support for the actions; the response from other NATO nations suspect something similar.

Nevertheless, the US usually expect all other nations to support them regardless of whether if they'd support it if it was on the other foot, so you may be right.

... and a misunderstood and misleadingly edited version of history at that. Take the Spartans for example, idolised by so many nowadays despite being slave-owning, state-sanctioned and thoroughly socialist nonces.
Wasn't there fairly recently a Hollywood propaganda interpretation of that conflict?
Spartan (=Greek) good ; Persian (=Iranian) bad, being the message for the masses.

Massive strategy change here from the yanks. They have sent Tehran a very clear message. If you mess with us then we will come after your leadership. We know where you are and we will take you out one-by-one.

No mass bombings or ineffective cruise missile strikes here - they are now going after the Iranian leadership and high command.

Over to you now Tehran - your move.

What allows a country to assassinate a person from another state and it to be legal?

I presume it's for the 'greater good' and that killing Solemani means that there is significant evidence and/ or a clear audit trail for that decision to be made and carried out such that it is an effective way of removing the danger Solemani poses.

Perhaps, but taking out this guy, a hero, a famed general, a national treasure, will make one or two people stop and think. If they can take him out, they can take out anyone...a sobering thought.....
That's already been common knowledge for nigh on seventy years.
