What's Arabs and Persians got to do with anything? Iran is part of the middle East.

What he highlights is that Arabs are not particulary a nation, more like upper category and they are terrible at fighting (lost Israel war even united, were sleeping quiet under Ottomans for centuries) Iran on the hand has always been independent and strong empire, fantastic at art of war too. As soon as US sets foot on Farsi land they are in huge trouble IMO, no way out of the swamp

I’d be surprised if they did go after members of the US (or Western) public; as you say it would provoke outrage here and TBH it isn’t really their style to respond to a targeted attack like this with random acts of violence against civilians (previous attacks on civilians have usually been in response to civilian casualties of their own).

Attacks on military or diplomatic targets are more likely, but most likely of all is a targeted attack in return, probably on someone who would not get universal support in the US but for whom the response to their death would further split the country (so a member of the Trump family or administration).

I disagree. I suspect that with Trump in power, with his ad-hoc and impulsive behaviour, this avenue could quickly escalate and the perpetrators would be clear.

Iran's policy of proxy-wars would suggest that they may launch an attack through a third-party, where the perpetrator is known but the link will be more 'tenuous'.

That's why attacks on US citizens (aid workers, contractors etc.) in neigbhouring countries would be a much easier and (relatively) safer option.
