Except they are taught this. "Death to America" is a constantly chanted political slogan in Iran and has been for some 40 years. They have a national death to America day. It is reportedly chanted at Friday prayers regularly. That not all of the populace are successfully brainwashed by it doesn't mean that these forces don't exist or that isn't a pivotal aim for the regime to maintain its power.

In response to others views, I am well aware of the history of the US and its Allies in the Middle East as well as elsewhere. I have also met dozens of Iranians in the UK and they seem very reasonable people. I did not suggest that they were not.

There is no brainwashing at all. Death to America is chanted in protest at the actions of the US government. A US citizen could walk the streets of any Iranian city and come to no harm.

Iran is a dangerous country in terms of its propaganda and its potential to inflict damage to local and regional economies through terrorism. Every single generation that grows up in Iran is taught to hate America. Unfortunately, Western foreign policies over recent decades have been the vehicle through which Iran has been able to grow its influence into Palestine, Iraq, Yemen and others. Taking out Saddam was the stupidest thing we ever did. The last remaining checks in the region are Saudi and Israel and these two just don't have the military might or resources to contain this Iran situation. Good on the American's for taking action against terrorists. That being said this is likely a one-off measure. The long-term plan can only be sanctions and trying to destabilise the regime.

The real issue is that the Saudi's don't want anyone exerting influence in the region whether its big countries like Iran or the rich upstarts. Lucky for the saudis they are our pals even though their govt is a lot more oppressive. Iran like Turkey has a real urban/rural divide with the rural support keeping them in power (this sounds familar).

They’re not really hijacked though (or maybe I misunderstood what you meant by that). A lot of them are against the regime

I am old enough to remember when the Taliban were supported by the West as heroic freedom fighters and all round good guys, just because their enemy was the USSR.

Similarly Iraq was the heroic country when fighting Iran in the early 80s. They were supplied with poisonous gas by the West, which was then used against Iraqi civilians. Oops it was only supposed to be for use against the evil Iranians. Oh well, let's move on

Similarly Noriega was a patriotic anti Communist until they found they couldn't control him. They knew well what his regime was capable of etc etc

They actually don't care what the ideology is of their " great Allies" in the fight of any particular day once Western economic and military interests are protected.

It is sickening to see the innocent people who are suffering as a result of realpolitik but it has been like that for thousands of years sadly.
