I liked it better when we had no money

Yep...that's the one I had in mind when I typed that.

That summer window was so sad.

In:
Hahnemann (free)
McFadden (free)
Straqc (loan)
Drenthe (loan)

Out
Arteta
Beckford
Yak
Vaughan

Those were the days.
I loved Drenthe as a player on his day he was up there with the best, just a pity through stupidity he threw his career down the toilet, he could have achieved so much more.

Indeed.

Apart from Seamus and Oumar, none of them seem to be very endearing.

The money ain't the problem. Being monied doesn't mean that character in recruitment needs to be forgotten.

Sadly I don't think we've made character a priority over the last few years. Mirallas immediately springs to mind.

Seamus Coleman has more character in his pinky nail than most of these. On top of it he ain't half bad at football. Give me 11 of that.

Kinda think that was the key to Moyes' success. Loads of players that wore the badge on their heart.

When you have money, and things aren't going so well, you just spend to plug the gaps. When you're skint you're forced to actually coach and improve the players you have.

Unfortunately we're crap at spending.

We had players who had limited ability but bags of heart. Heart is something you can't coach or improve, its just there. Our players stuck together and played as a family.

It all started in Martinez's second season before Moshiri. We brought in the biggest name in Europe - Samuel Eto'o and thinks started to slide. I think since Moshiri came in we spent money on players who don't fit the club and we have simply lost our identity.

Players like Jagielka and Baines would be a different class if it was five years ago, but they are old now and its unfair to give Jagielka so much stick. He's just passed it.

Look at the team that played against West Ham in May 2013 for Moyes' last home game. It wasn't the greatest side but that team played together and for each other. We need to replicate that spirit but we went out a bought a bunch of players who sadly came here for the money.

The only way out of this mess is - use these next 5 years to rebuild with the same manager in charge. I expect 5 seasons of relegation battles until we are sorted but whoever takes over from Sam, we need to give him the same chance we gave Moyes.
