Hypothetical Martinez question

Would we be in a better position right now with Martinez still in charge?

I really don't see how this is a debate.

The point is to win games AND entertain. Martinez's first season is the only time we have done this since Kendall.

Not true at all. The 07/08 season we were a joy to watch, Arteta and Pienaar pulling the strings, Yakubu up front, solid at the back and imperious at home. There was the 7-1 against Sunderland as well as the whole UEFA Cup campaign. The season after that we didn't come out of the blocks quite as quick but still finished 5th and got to the FA Cup final. I was entertained watching us personally.

Oh God, the moyes era.
Agree with you mate, Arteta and Pienaar were nice to watch. Yakubu a good finisher,
But everything started with a long punt from CB. Using the 7-1 is a poor example imo as it's the equivalent of us battering Burton with how bad Sunderland were that day.
But that's your opinion, good on you.

It's not really the equivalent of that, they were a mid table Premier League side. Are you saying that it's not entertaining beating a team 7-1? Because Bobby's Globetrotters never came close to it.

He's a cup/tournament manager. He will never be good enough to manage successfully in a top league.

I expect him to win the world cup coming but that wouldn't change my opinion on him not being good enough for us. He gets to pick some of the best players in the world to play his style and they turn up fit and ready which he couldn't do at club level.

I find him similar to the German coach who I think would also struggle at club level.

No mate, you just write loads which provokes debate (excellent- the point of a forum) and then when someone seeks to have such a debate you leg it. Just like here:

You're a sensationalist. One who is compelling with the nonsense you write sometimes however a sensationalist nonetheless.

Shame as I always quite enjoyed your ramblings.

You said Bolasie has an "excellent first touch". How am I meant to be debate that - it's like pointing at an orange and calling it a potato. All I can do is say it's an orange.

Oh not at all. I agree that 7-1 was entertaining.
I'm just saying that saying that generally we were more entertaining than Martinez's team because we blasted a Roy Keane side which contained Dean Whitehead, Paul McShane, Dickson Etuhu, Dwight Yorke and Michael Chopra isn't a fair statement. But purely imo- not saying you're wrong. Each to their own.

And there we have it,
Good afternoon to you sir.

Come off it. If something is just wrong, then it's just wrong - I can't counter it because there's nothing to counter.

"Bolasie has an excellent first touch."
"He doesn't."
"He does."
"He doesn't."
"He does."

... and so on. See what I mean?

So how am I meant to reply? Give me an example? I literally can't even begin to understand the viewpoint of Bolasie having an "excellent first touch" when he quite clearly doesn't and even his biggest fans know that isn't one of his assets. It's impossible.

That last Martinez year was the only time I’ve ever stopped getting up to watch the games. I can’t even remember how bad it was but I know I’d got so sick of it I stopped caring. That hasn’t happened yet so based on that, no we wouldn’t be.
Am not far from that point now mate, I don’t get upset anymore when we get beat, I expect it for example sat

You can only beat what's in front of you. You could say we beat a load of dross in Martinez's first season too, plus Arsenal. There's this narrative that it was non-stop white knuckle thrills with us cutting the rest of the league to ribbons every game, but we scraped wins over garbage sides like Cardiff, Villa and West Ham. But yeah, I personally enjoyed watching the 07/08 side as much as the 13/14 side.

Would we be in a better position right now if we had gritted our teeth and stuck with our wham spouting former manager?

I don't think Martinez is a bad manager. His system isn't much different than Pep's, we got 72 his 1st year, and freaking Brenda almost won the league with it. Bournemouth plays a similar style and while yes they hover in the bottom half no one says that Howe is a bad manager.

RM was inflexible in his style even though the league figured it out in year 2. He's not the 1st inflexible manager who is wedded to this style. Theoritically with a long rebuild it could work. However the answer is still no, because by at the end the club just tuned him out and stopped playing for him. When the players turn on a manager (whether justified or not) I don't care if your are Murinho, you are getting canned.
