Hypothetical Martinez question

Would we be in a better position right now with Martinez still in charge?

If you got Bobby, added just enough of Sam's pragmatism and lobbed in Moyes era ability to sniff out bargains and develop team spirit we'd be away.

However, that ain't likely is it?
That was Moyes' only saving grace as far as I'm concerned. He was just a Sgt Major in a tracksuit. Utterly out of step with modern football and its demands.

  • Resurrected Swansea football club
  • Won the FA Cup with an ale house team against one of the most expensively assembled teams in European football
  • Handed us our one and only season in the PL where we smashed through the 70 point ceiling
  • Took Belgium to the World Cup in their best ever qualifying campaign
No apology required.
  • Many managers have got small clubs into the Premier League, and I still wouldn’t want them, a la, Eddie Howe.
  • Won the FA Cup in the same season he relegated a team who were in the Premier League for 9 years. Also on this point, couldn’t you put this win down to ‘freakish’ then, too?
  • What did we win for that 70+ point season? All I remember was him blowing Champions League qualification in the last 5 games with very poor tactics.
  • LOL, he’s got some of the world’s BEST players at his disposal.

You do make me laugh, Dave, you really do.

If Moyes was out of step I dread to think what the next 3 were. European qualification on a sell to loan transfer policy. The rest all had money and couldn’t keep us out of relegation battles.

I respect Moyes more as time goes by. I recognise his flaws but overall he did a good job at stabilising us. Ultimately he was not the man to take us forward. Utterly ridiculous he got the Utd job. That was clearly some romanticized notion of a Scottish 'cut from the same cloth' successor held by a certain knight of the realm.

But was Martinez? Again, I have respect for what he acheived in his first season. The biggest disappointment was not building on it. Like all managers he has flaws. For me he was interesting because of his intense interest and focus on psychology. However his use of it was quite one sided - all about positive beliefs influencing actions. His big flaw was omitting to take into account context and reality of a situation. Namely tactics, defending and his increasingly lampooned public utterances. He also signed some utter toilet (mcgeady, Alcaraz, Kone, Mori, Robles, Cleverly, Besic). And Eto'o - what a bad tit he was. Did wonders for Stones and Barkley though. Barry, Lukaku and Delefeou were exciting signings we'd never have got under Moyes (Bobbies silver tongue at play). Maybe the extra season to see if he could turn it round would have been wise, but we'll never know.

Fitness usually is a probl;em when you inherit Dads Army off the previous manager who left him a time bomb in that respect.

He came in and got proper football out of that dour bunch...akin to plaiting sawdust.

There are interviews where he says he doesn't do fitness training as he believes that you use all the muscles necessary by doing ball work. Dads army ? It's was 3-4 years ago. Jags was 29 -30 baines 28-29 Coleman 24 most of our first teamers were under 30 and he then signed Barry. Fitness was not a problem in our "best ever points tally season" your off your head if you blame lack of fitness on Moyes two years after he left

Yeah, I can imagine you with our 80s teams:

  • Lost three cup finals to Liverpool
  • Didn't win anything in 86, 88 and 89
  • Had rubbish like Wayne Clarke and Neil McDonald playing for us
  • Only won the ECWC final against Rapid Vienna

I suggest you look at exactly how MUCH money Moyes had to spend prior to the firesale after 2009. He had a very tidy ne spend for the period between 2002 and 2009...not elite spewnding levels but very respectable vis-a-vis other clubs in the PL.

More hits in Martinez's transfer record here than misses. Moyes nought well at the £4-7M level but wasted a lot of cash on utter mince like Kroldrup and Beattie and Bilyaletdinov....and bought way too many 'signings for the future at the £1-2M mark who never made it.

Some are forgetting just how easy pickings Everton were with Martinez, shocking manager, might of made a good coach or assistent but a good manager has to be able to set up a team 1 - 11, he might of had to charm but not the knowledge to go with it

Must be exhausting in your house mate.

‘Do you want cornflakes Dave’

- ‘No, under no circumstances are cornflakes the best breakfast option, Weetabix is clearly superior in every department. And what on Earth is this semi skimmed stuff..’

You should be a Viz character.

I suspect we'd be roughly the same place in the league but with more shots on target.

I do think that Martinez would've spent better than Walsh/Koeman though*

*I know that's not saying much like.
