Howard gets a call from Obama

Getting out of that group was an achievement for the US. I know it may seem a trivial achievement, but NOBODY thought we'd get out of that group. The nation massively got behind the team. Television ratings were through the roof. Yeah...they achieved a lot actually, and the President took time out to thank them.

Not to gloat, but I always thought we'd beat Ghana, draw Portugal and lose to Germany. It's in the vaults.

No I'm not referring to Wondo as that was offside.

Dempsey was one on one from 6 yards out.

Dempsey will not be remembered for the miss mate...maybe in your eyes, but I've not heard a negative comment on the radio or TV about it over here. It was one on one, yes...and his touch was a bit heavy. Keeper made the save.

Wondo on the other hand...that has been talked about a lot. Poor fella.

People talking about Wondo are a bit thick then. The offside flag was raised. If people are not prepared to point the finger at Dempsey for missing a one on one from 6 yards then it's all getting a bit England, with no one blaming Gerrard instead trying to lump the blame on Baines and Jags.

For me there is no reason to blame anyone. Maybe that's because we were a far inferior team? I dunno...I'm generally not the one pointing fingers to find blame.

Oh and Wondo was two yards onside...but that's a whole different discussion ;)

The flag was up. So it wouldn't have counted. People lamenting it are stupid.

Maybe...Wondo didn't know that though.

I think this could actually be a cultural thing...for me there is only one person to 'blame' and that's Klinnsman...think he coulda done a bit better with his selection.

@Garrick @SerenityNigh @johnnydawg68

Do you blame our loss to Belgium on Dempsey for not scoring on that set piece?

I've heard some argue (Guardian pod) the linesman wasn't waving offside but instead pointing to spot the kick. I havent seen it again. But I blame Wondo for not slotting it, if we're going to oversimplify the analysis. The most controversial selections by Klinnsmann largely validated their presence, so I won't blame him.

Right...I don't really blame Klinnsman's selection...in hindsight though...sure would have been nice to have a proper target man to turn to when Jozy went down. Far too easy to do in hindsight mind.

I've heard the same about the linesman...unfortunately, I didn't record the game because I was out of town.

Blaming Klinsmann is bizarre. Lamenting a miss that was offside is even more so. Why even bring it up? If he is flagged offside, he could have burst the net for all the good it would do, it still wouldn't count.

You are lucky to have Klinsmann and by all accounts he is doing wonders for the grassroots development in America. Both your arguments are weird.

Dempsey scored with his feet in 30s, and with his nuts when it counted. Nobody in the US is tallying his misses. He's no Rooney like.

Mate...I'm not blaming anybody. Was only saying if there were someone to blame I'd put it on Klinnsman's selection...but that is only because of hindsight, which really isn't fair.

The bottom line...Dempsey is not to blame for the loss. If you feel the need to 'pin it' on him, so be it. His miss will not be remembered...the brilliant set piece will...his goal in the first minute against Ghana will...scoring with his bollocks against Portugal will.

Where was the spot of the following kick?
