Howard gets a call from Obama

I think that's a massive achievement for a nation who's national sport isn't footy, and has embraced that status. They have exceeded other teams progress, Italy, England.
Not to mention the world champions. It's more than a bit harsh to do down their efforts - especially Howard's record performance.

To be fair, that has more to do with us being crap than them setting the world on fire. Not that they're aren't very much in the mix of the credible teams in world football right now though.

They got to last 16 FFS its not like they achieved anything.

Getting out of that group was an achievement for the US. I know it may seem a trivial achievement, but NOBODY thought we'd get out of that group. The nation massively got behind the team. Television ratings were through the roof. Yeah...they achieved a lot actually, and the President took time out to thank them.

Don't get me wrong they did well to get through what was a hard group but I just think its a bit over the top, I mean last 16 its hardly worth shouting from the rooftops about. The blind school would have done better than England .

Something strange about this WC in America, I suspect it is the similar timezone and not having to wake up at 6am for games, but just about everybody has jumped aboard, including POTUS. But any consciousness-raising of the game in the US is a good thing, in my view.

If you told me Obama would personally call Tim Howard 3 months ago, I would have probably laughed. I suspect Bradley only got a call from the Secretary of Interior asking about his lack of transition play.

OK...let's say Ireland were in that group, and somehow got out of it. The Irish would be going mental...

More chance of the Irish President getting on the pitch than giving them a ring after they get out of the group stages.

But honestly mate, all that is, is White House publicity. They're trying to make Obama look good by cashing in on the recent viral popularity of Timmy. Great for him, and he deserves whatever adoration he gets after being the only one to turn up against Belgium (and turn up he did).
