Howard Equals Clean Sheet Record

it is a different era, but is it harder to keep a clean sheet now than then, I wonder whether the average goals per game in the top division has gone up or down since then?

I cant agree with you here mate. Goalkeepers are now a lot more protected so keeping clean sheets nowadays could arguably be more difficult. Years ago, forwards could bundle goalkeepers over the line and no offence was commited, these days a goalkeeper can come out with fists flying in any direction and not be penalised yet an opponent who has less reach advantage cannot breath near them. I suppose arguments could be made on your behalf by claiming the balls are a lot lighter now, ence making it more difficult for keepers to track the balls flight, but i dont think it is harder to keep clean sheets than it once was.

right i tried looking for that sort of statistic but couldn't find anything. West's record was considerably higher than big nev's though, do you think that West was substantially better than big nev? you can't answer no to that without accepting that this statistic needs to be taken with a grain of salt when you compare people from that long ago.

i'm not saying it's harder now, that's the exact point i was querying after an earlier post claimed it was unfair to compare howard with west due to the differences in the two eras. things have changed over the decades, but i'm not sure if that means they're any harder - maybe just different.

The balls where harder back then, now a days they are like fly aways, the way they swerve and dip is unreal.

Its hard to say, I think if a keeper gets over 10 clean sheets, him and his defense should be appluaded.

You have to bear in mind that a clean sheet is a team statistic as much as a goalkeeping statistic. it's hard for a team to keep a clean sheet with a crap 'keeper, but probably even harder for a good keeper to keep a clean sheet if playing in a crap team.

I can't really say who was the best 'keeper everton have had, but nev was a bit of a hero to me & i find it hard to imagine he could have been bettered.

by the way, who would have imagined that the 'keeper who has come closest to west's record is not southall or sagar, but george wood?

Its hard for me to judge the others, I mean I only recall The Binman, he was my idol growing up, he was utterly amazing. No keeper we have had or will ever have will come close to Big Nev.

i think you're right. nev was arguably the best in the world at his peak, i'm sure none of our other 'keepers, before or since, could seriously be described as such in their respective eras.

Agreed mate, then you have to take into account the rule changes since as well. For example where an under hit back pass from a defender can not be jumped on and collected easily like it was able to back then. I think each era has its things that make it harder from the others.

Binman is the shop-steward of the great keepers .
Im not a lover of our tourette's suffering stopper . But fair play , hes done well this year . Post Xmas esecialy . Still , if he hadnt have dived over that one of the baby-sitter's , this couldve been a special year . May still be .
Hes in credit .
