I think the fact that on a 'Club-friendly, positive' forum, 80% of people think that the Club's marketing is poor or very poor, speaks volumes :(

when you put it like that.. there must really be a deep rooted problem. on field it's the best it's been for years but off the field it's all doom and gloom. i like bill kenwright but surely it's him where the buck must stop?

This is what I posted on BK on Wednesday night:

As some people may know the Marketing department at Everton is shocking, but what amazed me more is that those charged with developing the clubs marketing sense outside of the club are also lacking in self-belief in what they do. Ok to some a job is just a wage bill, and 5pm on a Friday = [Poor language removed] off world i'm getting trashed. But what I can't abide is bollocks, and that is all I seem to get from those involved in promoting the name of the club.

In the Birkenhead store today to buy a cake for my Sister, did they have any? Did they [Poor language removed]. I then moved into rant mode and asked what the hell was going on with the Everton marketing, I got a vacant response. So I decided to illustrate with an example. I had just returned from Chester where I was getting a Father's day present for my strangely Liverpool supporting Dad. So reluctantly I had to walk into what I can only describe as a red explosion. Not one single inch of that Liverpool FC store in Chester is not covered with some kind of Liverpool paraphanelia. Hate them or not, that's marketing - if I was a fan of them and I am glad I am not, that store would be a dream. The ironic thing is that store used to be Everton FC, and it was like going into ASDA the day after a petrol strike, the shelves were empty and it basically looked like it was temporarily an Everton store. No effort, no desire, no pride, no sign of pushing the great history we have. The Birkenhead store is only slightly different in my opinion.

So having explained this to the guy he basically told me that the Everton store in Chester was run by Everton, and this one in Birkenhead is run by JJB. He then basically mocked Everton, which I then said well the JJB in Bromborough has [Poor language removed] all Everton stuff and the first thing you see is Steven Gerrards ugly face. To which he explained that it is like that because they are waiting for Everton stock to come in, and Liverpool's had just come in, hence why it was RS all the way, and as soon as you enter the store. Well the first thing you see is a poster of Gerrard, the one about family and crest. Well that's not for sale, so why can't they put up a poster of Arteta in the new coming soon shirt? Vacant response.

Just excuse after excuse as to why this club is sadly lacking in its marketing department. Man U got where they are because they are a marketable club. They were like that way before they started winning stuff, so what is our excuse? Too many people not doing their jobs right.

You may say I am moaning, but this is an integral cog of the Everton engine, and its vital that it is improved asap. I have had emails from the club, but they are basically saying the same, buck passing.

Ghost that seems like the stock reply "we are waiting for" and has been for years for a clud the is not what you could call well off its criminal I had to go to Crewe last week to pick something up for the wife and right by it is ajjbs so I had a quick glance . pathetic are Liverpool paying them to bankrupt us? Last summer while in the noth east I saw a shop big advert all premier clubs badges for sale and as I collect them Iwent in every one but Everton the guy said I had two but sold them and have not heard back from supplier.

The bit I dont like is we effectively gave Wigan control and profits of our merchandise

I actually work in advertising and in the past have offered free ideas to the marketing department of the club, as a supporter, only to be met with a negative response. In fact, I can't even remember the response, if any.

Maybe they thought my ideas stunk!!

I just sent an email to the Megastore inquiring about an item that isn't on the website.

I'll let you guys know how long it takes to get a reply, if I get one at all.

So, if I get to go to Liverpool, where will I buy an official Everton jersey?

It'd probably have to be the club shop by the ground i'm afraid mate, you will get them in any sports shop though but if you want the club to have your cash then that's the only option now

I'm not sure how we can market ourselves to the world unless we win the C-League or something. It will always be Chelsea, Utd, [Poor language removed] and Arsenal.

Well i am an Everton fan living abroad, and i find it hard to get my hands on any merchandise despite the fact that i am regisestered at the club shop online and everything. When i get over to the mega store im like a kid in sweet shop. The club never contact me about products, sales events etc. Now i am already a fan and hey do little to cultivate my intrest in merchandise or the oprofile of the club. So i can only imagine how little is being done to try and attract people to be fans of the club.

Without being to negative, what would be great for international fans, if we could buy a package to have all evertons games shown live abroad (all of them i would pay anything for that). Its certainly possible when i was in Austraila you could pick your match choice every week like on football first and watch the whole game, while those dopes on soccer saturday have all the games live in the studio. I thnk sometimes international fans get a raw deal, i live in Ireland and i get over these days about ten times a year, when i was younger i had a season ticket and flew over for every home game. But as like changes this becomes increasingly more difficult. An Everton T.V. that shows live games abroad for those fans were its logisitcly impossable to attend would be ace!

Do it!

Be nice if we could first market Liverpool and the surrounding areas, and then take it from there. But the club seem hell bent in putting down foundations in nations where football isn't the most popular sport.

I think thats a bit of a contradictorey point, six years ago, you could have said that it was always, Utd, Arsenal and the [Poor language removed], but chelsea would have had a similar profile to us internationaly before they became successsfull, which proves its not imposible to break into new markets, which gives me hope, yes exposure at the higest level is key but not impossable. The thing about breaking new markets abroad and i am talking about the big market econimies in asia and india, is that in my expierence the fans there are not as loyal as say indigionous fans, there support is based largely on success and winning and having great players, not so much on the tradition of the club.

I think part of the reason that the club isnt focussing on marketing in Liverpool or to a larger degree Europe is that the market is smaller then say the likes of Asia and the developing world and many fans have already developed long standing allegiences to a particular club. The fact we are moving form a 45,000 seater stadium to 55.000 seater stadium showes that, ok the club feels there is potential to grow loacally but only to an anticipated level of 10,000 compared to potential market of billions. This has seen the clubs priorites shift locally to internationaly. The club will market less in the western world praticularly locally and more in developing coutries with large population, hence all these footballing talent showes. Righhtly or wrongly local fans will slowly slip down the clubs priority list. For me thats why the club isnt to pushed about moving the club outside the city not that i am against the move (nor want to start another annoying thread about it)!

What puzzles me is the first class effort put into the community my grandson receives training and then a game every week and its not about picking the best all the kids are treated the same so why is there not similar enthusiasm for the commercial side
