Man, when I was 10 years old in the mid 80's in Ireland everyone had club bags, panini stickers, jerseys. I went to see Everton pre-season friendlies in Ireland, Irish TV paid for the rights to show live games. The FA cup winner made the main news (not sport) in a different country.Maybe I'm old fashioned but I don't like the way football has gone. It is all about marketing and commercialism now as the priority.
lolYou're probably right, mate. I'm making any memory of that game up as I go along.
At least we didn't lose hey...
We actually battered them that dayAs long as it's called the charity shield, and their goalie slots a winning own goal after a bit of penalty box pinball, I'm in.

Going back over the years our cup record, again, outside semis and finals is far better than our recent league encounters.
That's the point I'm making, mate.
Does anybody remember the Merseyside v Manchester game at Anfield back in the late 80's or early 90's?
I'd actually love that to happen again the rivalry in the city has got a bit too bitter for my taste.[/QUOTE]
Always was pretty bitter from what I remember
no doubt captain jags would love the opportunity to play alongside some of his best matesI think I'd enjoy watching that as a friendly.
I would be up for a Merseyside Derby in a friendly I have been thinking of Boston at Fenway Park due to their relationship with Fenway Group I like America and would like us to play over there. As the title suggests, would you be happy about it or not?
After seeing Manchester United play Manchester City in Texas with over 67,000 people in attendance, there seems to be a market for these type of friendly games overseas. Albeit, it's not competitive, there is still some obvious sense of pride from either set of supporters going into this. If it was Everton vs Liverpool, I would imagine a fair few of us would treat this like a Merseyside derby. However, I would not be pleased about it because I think these games should be left for competitive matches and it kind of takes the edge of it for me. Playing each other twice a season with all at stake in a high pressured container is enough for me. A friendly game like this takes that away and it can lose its appeal and glamour. The tie should always have that 'feel' about it, not that circus feel like it would in a friendly just to please the American/Aussie/Thai/etc. audience. Overseas friendlies should be about playing local teams from that country/continent, I am partial to the occasional tournament like the ICC we competed in a few years ago but I think the Merseyside derby should be left alone.
What are your thoughts on this?
Crap thread I know, sorry.
