I think you've missed the point of the thought experiment.

The question asks how today's society is different than that of Jesus. The people of Jerusalem went along with nailing him to something and waiting for him to suffocate.

This does not make the people of Jerusalem at the time faithless devil worshippers. It makes them afraid of the Romans, who did have a reputation for punishing revolt by killing one in ten of the offenders.

The question, then, is what people today would go along with because they are afraid of their government. Their government would most assuredly be afraid of the Second Coming, so the story doesn't end well for that person. They probably wouldn't go along with nailing the Second Coming to an object. The question on the table, then, is what people today would go along with.
