How would the UK react to the second coming of Jesus?

Why shouldn't the scriptures be taken literally, given they were our primary source of morality code for centuries?
It depends on the scriptures mate. On one hand you have the likes of 'Thou shall not kill' and 'Love your enemies' on the other you have 'An eye for an eye' and 'Suffer a witch not to live'. Plus God himself is guilty of killing his enemies etc. with the likes of the great flood, the first borns of Egypt and the Pharaohs army, Sodom and Gomorrah, and so on. It can all be a bit "Do as I say, not as I do" really.

I'd say most countries support the "an eye for an eye" because of how prevalent the death penalty is, including the United States.

Are you suggesting Boris is God…..or maybe it’s Gove….

I agree to an extent that religion is a useful tool for adopting morals into a society, even that it gives some people a sense of purpose, but that's all it is. If I were a ruler 2000 or so years ago, I'd definitely push religion on the uneducated populace. It's a great way to control the peasantry.

But there never was, nor ever will be, a man who did what Jesus supposedly did. Its fiction. No different to a child's bedtime story telling them to behave or the bogeyman will get them.

But there's the conflict, because that goes against the 'Thou shall not kill' scripture. You are either committed or you are not... you can't 'cherry-pick' (not talking about you personally).
By the way, I have nothing against you or what you may believe, I'm just finding this to be a nice friendly discussion so please don't think I'm having a go at you in any way, these are nothing more than my opinions.

You were claiming that the Bible and our holy texts are where we get our morality from.
Yet there is a passage that says it’s OK to rape a virgin as long as you box her dad off with a few quid and imprison her into a lifetime of marriage with her attacker.

Do you not see the contradiction?

Not bad if you're an ugly bugger who fancies, and wants's to marry, a certain stunning looking woman. Just rape her, give her dad the 'fee', then yippee, she's your wife... for life.

I think you're getting the wrong end of the stick here buddy. The verse you quoted is actually meant to protect the victim. Back in those days, no men was willing to marry non-virgin females and they were seen as burden. If a female lost her virginity through rape, she would be rendered "useless" so the rapist marrying her, would give her the chance of having a husband, financial support and respect. Obviously in 2021, our society was evolved so much to the point where these scriptures look bad or evil, even though they were all made in good will.

Well, I believe we wouldn't have as harsh responses to his magic tricks. I hope the general populous would be more 'meh' about them as we are a little bit more enlightened and don't actually believe that water literally turned into wine.

If he comes back he will do a few magic tricks and then go the way of David Blaine, a side show that nobody really cares about anymore but we would not nail him to a cross for it. Maybe just a few bad reviews in the Guardian.
I think it was more calling the rich out than doing tricks that got him into trouble with the authorities.
