They'd need a lot more than £50m to 'blow us away'. Too many crap players on big money. Unless they get sheikh money, they're forever doomed to be around us. They might finish above us occasionally, but they ain't blowing anyone away, because Utd, City and Chelsea will always be richer, Arsenal for all their whinging are a well-run club, and Spurs spend a fortune.
That's just it - they're basically getting that; but wasting it massively. They've spent over £85m net in the last two seasons alone.
Hence why I said "with a competent manager". They'll always have money and massive sponsorship deals. Literally the only thing stopping them comfortably finishing above us is the legacy of pure garbage from Dalglish and the youth team management skills of Rodgers.
We're deluding ourselves if we think anything other than this. You say Spurs spend a fortune; they've actually made a net profit in the last three seasons in the transfer market, but if they slipped substantially as Liverpool have, they'd simply smash £50-60m into players and regain their position.
Not sure if I'm making my point properly, but basically what I'm saying is the obvious - there's no way we can expect to finish above Liverpool and it wouldn't matter how many times we actually did finish above them because it wouldn't make it any more or less likely the next season.
They're in love with Rodgers though. There's no danger at all of the owners getting rid of him.
Would, say, Benitez do any better? I don't think what Liverpool spend is 'sheikh' money'. It's a lot, don't get me wrong, but they're not as big as Utd, and they don't give people £200k+ a week willy-nilly like City and Chelsea do, that's my point.
The signing of Daniel Sturridge summed them up - decent player but considered not good enough for Chelsea or City. Lets not forget they only have Suarez because they sold Torres. The Torres money was all spent on Carroll & Suarez.
You should probably reverse that question and ask them...unless I'm reading the league table wrong.
