To me there's four tiers of goals.
There's the top tier of our aims, the ones that if we achieved it would make it an excellent, memorable season. And that's winning a trophy.
The league, or if not that the fa cup or if not that the league cup.
If we can't win a trophy, then there's the second tier of goals, which would still make it a good season and that's europe.
2nd or 3rd to directly qualify for the the Cl and if not that 4th and the play off and if not that the europa. I like playing in europe a lot and it's significant in terms of money and prestige.
If we don't meet either of the top two teir of goals, it's not been a good season, but there are still a third tier of aims we can meet that stop it feeling too bad.
Stuff like playing good football, not embarassing ourselves in the cups, producing a young scouser of some talent from our academy and local bragging rights. Which means winning at least one of the derbies and/or finishing above them in the league. The difference between a season where we finish 7th playing like stoke having lost both derbies, and been knocked out of the two cups by tranmere and stockport while the RS finish 1st and finishing 7th having won both derbies, lost to the winners in both cups and playing like ajax while the RS finish 15th is significant. They're both unsuccessful seasons but the latter feels better and gives you more hope and enjoyment and smug satisfaction.
Local bragging rights are no subsitution for trophies or europe but I'd rather win at anfield and finish above them than not. It's one of those little things that helps make mid table seasons enjoyable.
And if we don't do any of that either, then our own real satisfaction comes from not getting relegated. Which is our 4th tier of aims or as I like to think of it 'the walter smith trophy'. Getting in a relegation struggle takes it down to a poor season and getting relegated takes it to a catastrapohic one.
