Current Affairs How do we tackle terrorism?

Terrorism inspired by wanting something, IRA, ETA, ANC, can be at least understood, and "defeated" via talk, compromise, and indeed, finally, the ballot box.

Terrorism inspired by hating someone or something cant be "defeated". But we will never let it win because by and large, the vast majority of the world read that latest attack, then just carry on doing whatever it is they hate about us anyrate.

There is the problem the IRA had a clear possibly achievable objective, United ireland. islamists crave a world under islam. There is no negotiating with such an outlook.

Terrorism is futile. Trying to stop terrorism is futile. Nobody wins. The Islamic State ideology is built on hatred for non-muslims. We all know it is wrong, but it is a hornets nest that Western powers probed and prodded, and now we have the fallout.

The Islamic State will never achieve its goals because their foes are too powerful. When they eventually realize this, then it will stop. The human race needs to evolve, together. It will take time.

Their hatred for Western Christian nations is built on those nations bombing the crap out of their homelands.

A lot of posts in this thread go to show if needed how it is never in a million years going to be possible to stop terrorism.

People advocating obliterating and invading any country with links, people advocating a 1984 style police state.

Not even realizing that many of those countries we support and supply arms too, many of those countries we gave this problem as we tried to bring them democracy via regime change.

Not even delving into the many actions we and our allies have done which has created the monster which it has now become.

It'll never be stopped until people regard all life as being equal, when the same outrage is felt by people at the loss of life from a terrorist bomb, or a lorry piling into Christmas shoppers as is felt when a wedding party is bombed, or when a US helicopter pilot guns down innocent people and makes jokes whilst doing so.

I'm short it won't ever be stopped because we are human and blind to anything different to what we can identify closely too.

Ah, but what will that require? That is the question.

What can we do that will not cost us our own souls? Must we wait for the days after they have killed our own precious children so that our souls will matter no more to us while we go forth and kill their precious children out of atavistic rage until there are no more to kill? We could, you know. As a technical matter, that could be done.

That would make it stop. Do you think that the likes of these would not kill us all if the opportunity arose? Still, few are that certain. Not yet, anyway.

Not until it is your child.

These are the existential questions man has been dealing with across history, and it will change as soon as human nature changes. So many are so sure that we are past all that, that it takes this kind of horrific event to remind us that we are just kidding ourselves in our bubble of wealth and security. Such is the price of life.

Meanwhile, we talk, and we post helplessly on the Internet. Pray for us.

To add to that, it may sound trivial, but remember the facebook flag changing for terrorist attacks, lots of German and French especially all over the shop, strangely any country that was a bit different that had such an attack or who wasn't an ally, the very same people - nah - not important enough, not their concern, don't need to show the outrage at Russian students being blown up, or of Turkish civilians or any other country of the many that have suffered.

that in a nutshell

There is no easy fix.

More security isn't always the best option. Nowadays if I want to go to the movies I have to go through increased security. On peak-moments this creates queues of people; also a target. If you want to do something like that; the possibility is always there.

I also don't buy into the exclusive social-economic thesis; granted the immigration policies of lots of Western countries are substandard but it isn't the only cause. Can't be neglected off course.

Do know one thing however; defusing all the problems in the Middle-East would be a good start but is very difficult.

They've just named the bomber.
I agree with earlier posts, shouldn't give him any press.

The frustrating thing about the whole situation is we created the problem and continue to be the problem...yet finger point that Islam is the problem.

How did 'we' create this problem. Why do we always take the blame for the barbarity of others. Maybe if we actually blamed the right people we might find a way of fixing the problem. Continually blaming the wrong party will bring no solution......
