Current Affairs How do we tackle terrorism?

People think Muslim's are exclusive to the Middle East and Africa. Eden Hazard, Pogba and Besic are amongst a large contingent of devout Muslim football players - I'm certain they don't harbour extremist views.

It does make you wonder how many Muslims some folk actually know. As with so much in life, but certainly in terms of 'in group/out group', the more familiar you are with 'the other', the less scary they become.

Totally and I think that's half the problem. I can't fathom the belief that people are condemning an entire religion for a callous act carried our by, what is in truth, a minority. As with anything though propaganda is rife and depending on who or where you get your news/information from, will largely gauge what your views on the situation is.

I got absolutely bombarded with abuse on Twitter yesterday for defending a young Muslim woman under a tirade of abuse from Tommy Robinson and his EDL muckers. Only to be told "You're part of the problem". Hate breeds hate.

There was never any reasoning to be done with this ideology. Stewart Lee did a stand-up on it - they want the obliteration of western culture; that isn't a negotiation starting point.

Just wipe them out, honestly. Military intervention, anywhere they have a stronghold, absolutely destroy them, over and over again. Stamp on the cockroaches as soon as you see one.
Can I assume you mean terrorists and extremists rather than an entire religion?

So i keep hearing the motivation is western interference in muslim lands. But at the same time their deeds are nothing to do with Islam.
Which one is it?

It should be said that this is not confined to Islam (or migration). For instance, I was reading an EU paper on robots and AI this morning, and the most fearful were those with the least knowledge of the technology. In so many areas, knowledge does seem to breed understanding.

It could be argued that getting rid of saddam hussein was one of the worst thought out ideas that have been carried out.

The whole WMD thing, as weve since found out was a sham, and Iraq were never going to be a real threat to the western world alone.

One thing is for sure, hussein kept his country in check, rightly or wrongly so, something that we have been unable to do since over throwing him.

Countries such as Iraq are not in a pisition for democracy with all the different factions who live there. it was always going to be disasterous over throwing hussein.

We made many many enemies in the gulf and afghan wars. there is simply no easy solution to any of this im afraid.

You seemed to be suggesting that the ultimate end goal of all Muslims is to convert or kill.

The EXTREMISTS won't stop until we either cease to exist or convert.

Don't see what that has to do with Besic.

Apologies for offending your religion, I do not have any problems with true Muslims.

You'll never stop people wanting to become terrorists

Nor will you be able to stop every terrorist attack

All you can do is hope to have systems in place that minimise the effects of terrorism as much as possible

You can't destroy an ideology (it'll always exist in some form) - but you can minimise it like you say. Not just through systems, but through action.

When you basically allow a physical rallying point to exist in the form of that 'caliphate', you are allowing a symbol for these psychopaths to latch on to. The religion is essentially irrelevant, because it's not the religion that is the issue - it's the twisting of it for ideological purposes. To practical purposes, Islam and whatever the hell ISIS is are two completely different things.

We've allowed ourselves to be muted because of mistakes of the past, instead of learning from them and still acting. It's a war, whether we like it or not, and like any war you either fight it or submit to the side who is prepared to fight - not a war against Islam; but a war against those who have corrupted Islam.
