There is something else.
Anxiety. It's in the stands, it's in the players, it's in the play. Even a goal up we're all waiting for the mistake. And it's almost like we will it into being.
Getting rolled over repeatedly has destroyed what little confidence we have at home. Even when we've won it's been nip and tuck.
But last night showed us something more. We all sighed with relief we scored the penalty, got into HT and set up for the SH. But we didn't come out playing, then lost our minds and gave a man away. This moment here. We were up against it. Unlikely now to get back into the game. When the expectation dried up we started playing football. We started moving the ball around and looking for space and a cross.
Could this be the away form belief we see? Now we are officially the underdogs we can relax and play our game.
It's all mentality, forged by experience. They can only play when they're up against it. When that aspect isn't there they freeze, and look round for inspiration.
Underdogs: "We'll show you!"
Favourites: "We don't have a clue!"
Great post mate and i do feel that part of it - this group is largely one that has been in a relegation battle for years so to change the psychology around that is like i mention the adjustment.
I do feel however the team isnt good enough to go tow to toe and win against every team in the PL, games against other mid table teams are going to be marginal, home or away - we have seen that the difference between home and away is the approach of trying to take the initiative, the team all season has shown it snot good enough to beat teams comfortably - we just dont score enough goals. So at home we try to extenuate the poorest part of what we do as a team, create and score - we are one of the worst n the league. Inevitably it doesn't come of.
Ive come to the conclusion that this team isnt good enough to go on the front foot and take the initiative and win enough consistency to be a force at home - i think if we set like we do away more - we will get more points - but i also kind of dont want to see that in our development nor do i think it would be accepted by the fan base.
So overall i feel this is the snap shot of were we are at this phase of our adjustment, good enough to soak up in the main, keep a foothold in the game and capitalise in momentum in games away - do it occasionally at home - but overall not good enough to take the initiative or break down teams when they ask us to go on the front foot at home.
Im coming to accept that as just where we are - an uncomfortable truth is we dont have full back and that is undermining, we dont have players who score enough goals to be beating the majority of teams and we are an injury in a key area or two away from a crisis, while about what 30-40% of the squad are youngsters or year 1 in the PL. All of that can be compensated for away but its very evident at home.
I frame it as transititiion - we always knew this year would be one and i guess we could always expect growing pains with it - like we saw last night.
We're 1 summer window into 3 in terms of rectifying that mate.
