I'll play devil's advocate on this one.

One advantage that you lot have over a presidential system is that you have someone to play the role of being an enduring national symbol, and deal with the ceremonial head-of-state nonsense that has nothing to do with actual governing. Americans tend to transfer the symbol part of that to the flag, but that lacks a human touch. As someone who lives abroad, I would tell you that having someone like Elizabeth in place probably elevated your presence on the world stage in a way that came back to the nation's treasury with a huge multiplier. I strongly suspect you would see fewer of us tossing coin around in London, and more in places like Paris and various Italian cities, if things were otherwise.

Now, if you want to argue that Charles has about as much human touch as a flag, I'm not inclined to disagree. Equally, if you want to argue that you would have been better served by having the last PM's calendar packed with that nonsense rather than the business of governing, I would say the same. If you want to argue that the present PM is qualified for neither head-of-state duties nor governance, I'm 100% on that train.
The yanks will always "toss coin around" over here. Never forget: we gave birth to you. The UK is the USA's motherland.

God save the new king :)

I dont think they are personally. In fact, I am sometimes surprised at how "in touch" they can appear to be. I mean, they have never lived in a crappy flat, nor had to worry about the bills, but they are either brilliant actors, or they at least try to get what normal folk go through. (most folk they meet are normal people).

That said, I thought The Kings speech earlier was a pretty decent debut.

They live amazingly luxurious lives on the back of deluding people like you that they are in touch. It's beyond pathetic. The idea you have to bow down before someone because of their birthright sums up why this country is going to the dogs.

Ignoring the fact I'm Irish the point here I think is two fold:

It's undemocratic
Her offspring are loathsome

It was a remarkable thing for McGuiness to do. I'm not sure I could have done it to be honest.
Faced huge opposition to do it but he did. Irish politics is now all about reconciliation and moving forwards together. McGuinness accepting the hand of the Queen was hugely symbolic.

If the DUP could now similarly accept to serve under the democratically largest party Sinn Fein then we can all move forward.

I think with that meeting there was an element of tokenism on both sides. But it took courage on both sides to make that step and take the flack for it. I have doubts about how sincere the meeting was though but the gesture was certainly huge.

From a Sinn Fein perspective the long game has been, as Gerry Adams stated, to Break them with equality. This was another act to take a step to show tolerance and respect for culture/identity that wouldn't be reciprocated by the DUP as shown with DUP senior leaders refusal to meet the pope.

Incredible thing for Martin McGuinness to do as her troops who swore allegiance to her murdered 14 civilians in his own city.
Oh wake up, shall we do a body count? Adults and kids killed by each side?
Who was the better person?

The point of a peace is not to measure what each side has done in the past but what each side can do to better the future..
