Harsh against Moyes but now seen the light?

Not quite.

I, like the rest, hailed him as the second coming at the start of his spell because he was getting us into Europe and so forth. All I see from him now though is alehouse football, not one win at Anfield in 10 years despite some of their worst spells in recent history coming in that time, no trophies and a vapid and condescending attitude towards the supporters as if he owns Everton and that we have a cheek ever questioning him, the board or the players.

One of the highest wages in Europe for a manager with the expectation of survival at worst, top 8 at best. Possibly one of the worst value for money coaches there is right now?

He's an alright manager with a good eye for a bargain, but I'm afraid for a great Everton manager I want more than that.

That nails my biggest gripe with him. Who in fcuks name does this feller think he is with his attitude? I can take arrogance...but only from the highest of achievers, not someone who's won fcuk all and serves up boiled shite every other week. That this calibre of man then stands in front of his paymasters with a shield daring anyone to question their mismanagement of the club just about puts the top hat on it.

He came in and steadied the ship and made us hard to beat. After the surrender monkey slop served up by Smith we were (and still are) grateful. But he's just treading water here now for a big pension. He's happy just turning the engine over to get the same effort as last season and he'll hammer the message home soon (and often) that he really cant compete, so dont expect too much.

More people need to see that light.

I've defended Moyes when he's come in for criticism in the last few years because I genuinely like him as a man and I really like the way he runs our club. I like his buck stops with me attitude, I like his totalitarian way of running the club, implementing his men through the academy etc... I think it shows a strong will and a strong character and the fact he's been here for 10 years without any major issues (at least not since he's learned from early mistakes at the start of his tenure) or revolts shows he's very good at that style of management.

However, if this summer comes to an end with us having signed Pienaar and a few other frees Moyes has chosen and without losing Baines or Fellaini, I expect something significant. In all honesty, shy of AVB living up to his hype from this time last season or Rodgers being the second coming of Shankly Liverpool fans have billed him up to be, I expect 4th, or at the very least a sustained challenge for CL football that's still looking possible by the run in, and a cup.

I think this season will be Moyes' defining season as Everton manager and go a long way to defining how history remembers him.

It makes me laugh the people who use "moyes hasn't won a trophy" stick....to judge his tenure as our manager. As said bar portsmouth the big teams win the trophys who spend the big money 95% of the time.

It's no disgrace not have won a trophy...

How long since arsenal have won anything?

It probably helped them win trophies by not getting knocked out of cup competitions by crappy lower league teams.

Its not just winning cups which is the problem, its the fact that in 24 attempts under his management we've reached 3 semis but crashed out early rounds way more times than a club of our level should of done.

His cup record is poor considering the team he had at his disposle.

Oh dear.

Trophies mean everything.

You only have to see the blatant swerve by Spurs for Moyes, who was free and easy to talk to about the job as he has year left on his contract and never ruled himself out of the job, for AVB.

Moyes looked pretty desperate and pathetic hawking himself round after that job.

This thing about winning trophies. Yes, it is important, and that's where the glory lies. But using it as a stick to beat Moyes with is, frankly, ridiculous. With the squads that we have we don't have a prayer of winning the Premiership, so realistically if we're going to win a trophy it has to be one of the cups. But this is still incredibly hard to do. Look at the facts. Since we won the FA Cup in 1995 only six clubs have lifted the trophy : Chelsea (6 times), Arsenal (4), Man United (3), Liverpool (2), Manchester City and Portsmouth (1). Bar Portsmouth every one of those teams had a stronger squad than us. Let's face it, Moyes is far from being the only manager around who's tried and failed.

What about the league cup?

League cup winners since '95 beyond the old SKY 4

96 Villa
97 Leicester
99 Spurs
00 Leicester
02 Blackburn
04 boro
08 Spurs
11 Brum

Also losing finalists in that period, something we haven't managed include giants such as:

Cardiff
Wigan
Bolton
Tranmere
Boro
Brum
Leeds
Leicester

I just don't get this Moyes filter that excuses the likes of Cardiff and Portsmouth reaching more cup finals than us.

Or the fact his one fa cup final aligns us with Southampton, Milwall, West Ham, Cardiff and Stoke.

How evertonians can keep justifying his cup record is absolutely beyond me.

Surely we have reached the same amount of Cup Finals as Portsmouth and Cardiff?

Davek.....

Having read how my statement looks I'd like to clarify...

It's no disgrace on moyes us not having won a trophy.

Size of club we are you would like us picked up some silverware but with where we were and what we'v invested we have no divine right to have won anything.

Yes we could of had some luck and picked up a trophy along the way but it would of been through luck nothing else.
Oh and come on... Everton are not the only team to loose to lower league opposition.. All teams go through that from utd through to Bolton!

Ultimately, here's the thing with Moyes: him being a relatively underfunded but adequate manager effectively cements in place a regime that fails to attract investment. Our board's situation is like that old fairground trick where the biker goes around 'the wall of death' kept upright by centrifugal forces - go slower (relegation/relegation near miss) it crashes to the floor; go quicker ('overachieve' with a top 4 finish leading to fans clamouring for investment and to push on) and it hurtles out of control. That's the Everton dilemma, and Moyes is happy to keep riding that bike around the wall indefinitely for them.

It's a neat trick that wall of death...but you can only tolerate it for a short while before it becomes unwatchable and unsatisfying.

As pointed out before, these have at least won the league cup -

96 Villa
97 Leicester
99 Spurs
00 Leicester
02 Blackburn
04 boro
08 Spurs
11 Brum

Closest we came was a semi-final against Chelsea and lost out to a Sean Wright Philips header (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) against 10 men chelsea, and a Joe Cole goal in the 2nd leg at home.

Forgive me, this is a Moyes thread, so why on Earth did you list trophys that were won before he was in charge?
