the Merchants in Lancaster, not been in some time but it used to be great in the summer getting drunk outside until it got too hot, then retreat inside to the cooling depths of the wine cellar. Also the Water Witch in the same city, though having the canal nearby meant that you couldn't get that wasted.

the Nell Gwynne just off the Strand in London, really nice and the greatest hiding-pub in the West End

Bit nearer to home - The Albion, off the City Walls in Chester.

A pub that has not changed inside since the First World War, as you can see from the pics.

Al Murray surely based the " Pub Landord " on the licensee of this place.

The pub is " family hostile ", does not serve " poofs or tarts drinks " cocktails or shots. Has no music or gaming machines and race goers are not generally allowed in. ( last time I went in, I went in through the kitchen as the front was locked up to keep race goers out ! ).

The licensee has been here for nearly 40 years and it really is " his gaff ". Compete with pub dog and cat, that steal your food if you're not vigilant.

The food is amazing for the money with the oatcakes being the pick at about £4.00 a serving.

A wide variety of real ales which are all perfectly kept and a massive selection of whiskeys.

A true gem of a pub.
I'm pretty sure it's a listed war memorial too.

The Salutation - Doncaster.

On the main road that leads to the race course.

Despite being a Greene King pub, still has a good selection of ales from across the country.

Real fire, cracking juke box and does decent pub grub.

Possibly the only decent pub in the centre of Doncaster.

Doncaster the place that manages to make Birkenhead look sophisticated !

The London Inn, Padsfow, North Cornwall.

Early 18th Century fishermas pub off the main drag in the Rick Stein influenced hell that is Padstow.

A pub that has somehow managed to stay unchanged, despite Padstow being over run by people called Penny and Sebastian, wearing Barbour Coats and Hunter Wellies in the middle of Summer.

Cracking ale, delicious simple pub food, locally caught crab, pasties etc.

Great place for a lazy afternoon session and escaping the tourist hell outside .

I stayed the night there a few years ago. There was a couple of actual fisherman drinking there. Was nice to escape from the ubiquitous Rick Stein. Would like to go to Padstow on May Day.
