The free weights section is really good actually, plenty of benches and dumbells. I don't like machines you see. The scallys made me laugh though, they were nearly all doing arms or chest yet had big guts!

Yeah I don't rate machines either, some wools in there who seem to think that throwing the dumbells after a set makes them look "cool"

Be a wee bit careful with some of the calories burnt tools as they often massively over-estimate. There's a calculation you can use to get a decent figure.

To work out energy expenditure in joules, you multiply average power (/1000) by time in seconds. Thus, the work done in 1-hr at 190 W avg is 684 kj (0.19 x 3600). To convert this to kcal you divide by 4.18, i.e., 164 kcal.

However, the human body when cycling is only around 25% efficient (normal range ~ 20 - 26%), thus, this needs to be calculated, to work out the human energy consumption, i.e., 164 / 0.25 = 656 kcal.

To give you an idea, 190 watts on a flat road would equate to around 26km/hr, so 24km/hr is going to be around the 650 calories mark. Still a decent amount, but I'd take the figure given by many tools with a big pinch of salt.

AS you say, be much nicer when the sun comes out. Did you watch Milan - San Remo on Sunday? Looked pretty epic. Cavendish didn't look very happy after riding for 7 hours in snow and rain!

Concept 2 rower ordered lad. Stripping the work benches out of the garage to put in she'd to make way for rower and a bench

Training has gone really well over the past week. Done several hard tempo sessions of around 42km in an hour to prepare for the Alpes in June.

Could really use some sunshine though as all this cold and damp is no fun.

That's not bad mate, I did an mtb sportive thing a couple of weeks ago and it took me 3 and a half hours to do 40km! It was VERY hilly though!

Hills are the fun part though huh? :D

Most of the training is for the Giau as figure that with 100km of the Pordoi, Campalongo, Sella and Gardena passes in the legs it'll be around an hour of climbing (hopefully a bit less)

That's the tough thing, doing these climbs when you have miles in your legs. Did Alps d'Huez this year and found it ok, but doing it again the next day having ridden 130km was a different kettle of fish.

I just worked out that if I buy a bike before I start my new job I'll save £125.40 a month, a whopping £1,504.80 a year. For what google maps claims to be a half hour bike ride, that's excellent. Especially as Manchester is almost entirely flat.

Bruce, any other cycling fanatics, should I get a road bike or mountain bike? I've been surfing Gumtree. Keep in mind I'm only using it for commuting.

Any thoughts on this one?

Road bikes are great, but it does depend what you're going to use it for. If it's just for commuting to work and back then the one you linked would be fine. Reasonably sturdy looking, but not overly chunky like many mountain bikes can be. It's also not sufficiently shiny to attract thieves (although still make sure you lock it up well if it's in the open).

Oh, and the mudguards are really useful for your commuter. Nothing worse than getting a soggy arse, especially if you don't have any changing/drying facilities at work.

If you're keen on a nice bike for road cycling then the Boardman bikes come pretty highly recommended (from Halfords anyway). Pretty sure they'll be in the cycle to work scheme as well so you could get it a bit cheaper through that.

Be careful though, it can be quite addictive :)

Those Boardman's look really good mate, sadly they're a bit out of my price range!

Haha, I know this first hand as my housemate is addicted since he got his 3 months ago, he has an app on his phone and competes with other commuters on the same route.

Also don't like the people who despite there being about 50 foot of mirror decide to do their curls right in front of your bench (y)
