Unfortunately Mickey, he's what used to be called a "luxury " player - Duncan McKenzie, Sheeds etc.

Capable of sublime moments during a match, scores some wonderful goals and sets up many more.

However doesn't track back or defend and in a Del's case can't last a full match due to paper lungs.

The modern game demands that wide players are able to defend and track back.

I love him to bits, but unless someone can get him defending and tracking back, things are always going to be the same for him - close but no cigar.

It depends what sort of RB you play him with really

If the RB hangs back then it offsets Del's more attacking style

What he can't keep doing is shirking out of 50/50 challenges in the middle of the park

I expect slightly more commitment to the cause than that

Yes, but he got moved on as well.

Indeed.

And a decade before that the Golden Vision was moved on much to the dismay of the majority of Evertonians.

And no doubt a decade from now another crowd pleasing ball player will be moved on and those among us whom like Cavalier football as opposed to the Roundhead approach will be saddened :(

It happens.

It happens all the time.

It doesn't make it any less sad.....especially as in Del's case there is so much untapped potential which this club cannot afford to cast aside so readily.

I am a bit shocked with all the people coming out of the woodwork saying he's plop though

That's modern football analysis really. A player is either amazing or crap, there is no real room for balance or nuance. The middle ground is dead

Look, I'm not going to sit here and say that Del is the finished article, because he isn't. I was one of the very first on here to send some gentle criticism his way. I've always felt there were certain areas of his game that he would be best served to improve, and I got a fair amount of stick for it at the time as well. Perhaps this sharp 180 when it comes to sentiment is a symptom of the hero worship many had for Del? Maybe we'd all be best served not to overhype the younger lads and give them room to breathe when it comes to development?

However, I have also always believed him to be very talented with lots of potential, and I do think that potential can be unearthed

Maybe a loan and some regular minutes will be good for him? Maybe it'll give him a chance to move his development on a touch?

Personally, I think he gives us an extra attacking dimension, which we saw against Leicester, and I'd much rather keep him at the club if only because he gives us another option when it comes to attack. To be able to bring someone like Del off the bench at the hour mark and have him start terrorising tiring wingers is something a lot of teams would kill for

That being said, if Koeman doesn't see a role for him then maybe it's best for his own welfare to get a move where he'll get regular minutes?

All I will say to the big Del fans is this, you don't have to meekly accept that your boy is on his way. We live in a social media world, so use that forum to make your voices heard. He's not left yet. Let the club know how you feel. Fight for him to the last whilst you still can!

Peace and Love!

Yay.....great post, Mike...

But we lost the game.

He's an utter liability in as physical a league as the PL. We need rid of mentally weak, tackle shy, shrinking violets.

And but for Del that narrow defeat might have turned into a rout.

There was nowt "mentally weak" or "tackle shy" about him that day nor was he he a "shrinking violet" as he almost single handedly turned the tide and dragged us back into that game.

As everyone knows, I'm a big proponent of 4-4-2, but I wouldn't mind seeing us line up 4-3-3 with a front three of Kev, Rom and Del, and a midfield of Davies, Schneiderlin and Barkley

I reckon Del would shine in that formation if I'm honest

with the fullbacks we have mate, the formation we've hit on right now is the one we need to stick with, Lukaku has help up top from mirallas, Barkley is given mnuch more space to play and Williams looks a rock rather than a bit of a liability that he can do in a flat back four

No player should "want" to be a bench option.

They should be wanting to start every game.

And having started and played very well at Watford, Del has hardly even been on the bench in an EPL game since, if at all.

Terrible shame if this lad is really leaving.

Hopefully it will only be a loan and he impresses in Italy and we see him back here in August.

Agreed on every single point.

Fancy a bum?

to get the best out of Deulofeu we'd need to shape the team around him, and effectively kick coleman out the side for a 'hibbert type' of rb mate

If at the age he is now you have already busted out of two clubs for the same reason and are busting out your third, under three very good managers, and you still havent adressed the issues that caused you to bust out, you never will do, as i stated a bit ago as well, you can't give someone an engine who hasnt got it inside them - he will never have the stamina for this league - much like some runners just cant last in a distance race or boxer who blows up after a few rounds

Intrinsically flawed - which is a shame cos all the natural talent in the world
