Why must people continue to label and divide people? Im a big believer of how can we end racism and discrimination in general when we still continue to divide each other based on colour/religion/sexual orientation etc.

Well aware, but that's a long period of time. I'm not in favor of telling some Courthouse in Alabama they've got to get rid of a 120 year old marble bench talking about how Lee spend the night there. It's American history. Discuss it in the context you think is necessary, move it to a museum, put it in whatever context you like.

here's another one for UK people trying to get their head around whats going on.
Soldiers from fort Bragg have been deployed to DC for riot control.
So if you are a black protester, you might be facing off with soldiers from fort Bragg.
@RAFUH may know more about this given it's location.
Fort Bragg is the biggest military instillation in the world with some 25,000 inhabitants.
It's named for Braxton Bragg who left the US army to become a slave owner on a sugar plantation in Louisiana.
After the outbreak he became a general in the confederate army and fought against the US army so he could keep the right to own black people.
Now the biggest military base in the world, that serves the army he fought against, is named after him.

Love a good contradiction in the south.
There's probably a dozen military bases in the South named after confederates - Forts Benning and Lee come to mind.

It is always amazing to see folks that consider themselves the uberest of uber-patriots waving a confederate flag. The irony is so lost on them

Discrimination exists in many forms - just because you are white doesn't mean you have some mystical free pass (look at the victims of the grooming gangs in Rotherham etc who were largely white working class girls and targetted as such).

I could relate to a black lad who grew up on my estate alot more than some posh white guy who grew up in some leafy surburb in the South.

But even that in itself is grouping people based on upbringing.

If I replied to every single comment I’d be here all day. Sure, there’s obviously certain unemployed and the odd furloughed members that are here and have the time. But that doesn’t apply to me. Plus, the main points I've already said in other posts.

There has been a massive demise of the family unit within the black community in the U.S since the 1960’s. From 80% two-parent households to only 34%. This is a massive factor and needs fixing.

This not only effects crime, but the well-being and mental health of the individual growing up in single-parent households.

Change can only come from within in this regards. Why is this part of Black American culture? I don’t know.

We should all agree that in the United States:

*Black American crime statistics are an absolute disgrace.

*Blacks killing each other in record numbers are an absolute disgrace.

*American Police brutality in general across the board is an absolute disgrace.

*The cops responsible for the murder of George Floyd are an absolute disgrace.

Telling black children that they “live in a racist country” and that “they are oppressed” and everything is “racist”, is not only a lie, but also helps nobody and causes division between races.

Telling black children that they have all the opportunities in the world in the United States, (including the potential to become President) might motivate them to become part of the 800,000 black millionaires in the U.S.A. Or at the very least be part of the 80% who are not in poverty.

He just doesn't want to accept he has benefitted from white privilege. It is hard for some people to accept the premise, especially if they grew up poor (like I imagine many of us did on this forum considering where a lot of us are from).

The ones that went up straight after the Civil War are normally just lists of local men who died, men who were often volunteering for the money or to protect the family farm etc.

The biggest rate of increase was between 1900 and 1920. About 40% of the statues we are talking about were erected then... Largely as an FU and a "Know your place" to the local african americans.

The way America was built, literally on the backs of black people "working" for free at the behest of a white overlord, definitely makes the issue much great here than in other European nations. European countries just colonized other nations and enslaved them there and didn't take them back home like the US did.

Absolutely, though (and I should have been clearer in my post) I think the issue of white vs black has been deliberately stoked by the rich over there to control both, and to prevent them recognizing that (as @ForeverBlue92 says) they really do have more in common than they do with their "betters".

Class issues are a whole other issue. Can't agree more on that.

I would argue the "FU" rate/"know your place" rate was substantially higher later, as opposed to more genuine memorial and historical efforts in the time frame you reference. The reality is that in most of the American south there was very minimal need to do such a thing ("know your role" etc.) in 1910.

I also think there is a higher chance of having items that have obtained status as importantly historic/artistic during the time frame you reference.
