This Edward coulston statue.

Are they going to wipe all the hospital's , schools , churches, charity organizations he helped set up and fund from history now?

Will they tear down any hospitals and schools funded by slavery? Are they going to do that everywhere ? Remove all trace of the slave trade in the UK.

....like they want to pretend it didn't happen all in the name of cultural appropriation. I know what's worse than mentioning the slave trade and pretending it didn't happen is far worse.
Insert Jimmy Savile and hospital wings into that statement.

They could always just change the names, just a thought like.

If you think that removing a statue of a slave trader somehow equates to erasing history then you’ve not been paying attention.

yes they should really be tipping the infirm out of their beds in the car park right now buddy and preparing the TNT to eradicate bristol off the map.

Selective outrage. Remove the man's name from history but keep all the good things he did.

Perhaps slave traders weren't all evil , but merchants. Some were evil because it wouldn't have started otherwise. It's hypocritical to take offense to one name from that time when large parts of the country were built on the slave trade , Liverpool very much included in that.

Why can't things he seen as horrible dark history without having the urge to purge it like it never happened .

No they most likely aren’t.

will these things be renamed, probably.

Someone posted that John Oliver video up before - money raised by Saville helped build cancer wards etc, they can be there but honouring him with naming rights etc isn’t right.

It's not a black and white subject that but removing a name is slightly different to purging from existence as I keep hearing people suggest about this fella. The bloke did great things and was part of horrible things, any point in history you see it over and over. Christopher Columbus for example .......

At the end of the day this fella was a businessman at a time where a horrible stain on history was happening. I have no idea how the bloke was personally but he did use some of that evil money for good reasons. Unless this was a fella that started the slave trade then he simply invested in what was the business at the time. The schools and hospitals alone suggest to me he wasn't on par with the founders.
They don't want to pretend it didn't happen, though. They want it to be consigned to museums for people to learn from it with the hope that we don't repeat the same mistakes/injustices again.

Sadly, with eastern Europeans being trafficked across Europe and the rapid growth of the middle east, using slave labour, it would appear the lesson hasn't been learned.

That is sadly an example of people having selective outrage. Rightly call the slave trade for what it was but turn a blind eye to modern day slavery

Insert Jimmy Savile and hospital wings into that statement.

Not quite the same thing though is it. Coulton built the hospital's to begin with, saville fiddled kids whilst raising the money probably.

Saville hid behind a family friendly personality to abuse kids.

It's not just that, renaming everything , removing all trace of him bar confining him to a museum as an example of how evil he was.

Except for all the charitable work he did, things built for the people etc.

Perhaps , we don't airbrush history as it suits us and recognise good in what was otherwise a dark time.

Coulston didn't want lower class people and those of a different religion to have the use of those facilities btw.

You're completely missing the point of where the money to build them came from also.

Erecting a statue to him about 100 years after his death is also weirdly reminiscent of the whiff of nostalgia stirred up by Brexit. It's almost an attempt to remind the population about the British empire at a time when it was coming to an end.

Just odd.

Only on Saturday you’d never heard of this slave trader, and now you’ll likely know exactly who he was and exactly what he did. Notably lobbing 19,000 people into the Atlantic and transporting 84,000 slaves, including 12,000 women and children. He also branded them with his companies initials, but he built some stuff, so was a good egg eh....

Yet now you know all of this, and yet here’s you trying to maintain he’s been airbrushed from history.

As for Liverpool, you ever heard of the International slavery museum like?

They should go further, the pyramids were built by the use of slaves let's blow them up, the coliseum tear it down, great wall of China that's gone too, the profit Muhammad traded and owned slaves will any of these tugs tearing down statues be brave enough to go into a mosque and do similar damage.. slavery is a stain on human history, every people of every colour have endured slavery at some point even currently there are an estimated 18 million slaves in the world.. but I don't see what destroying artifacts of the past will achieve, we can't hold the people of the past to modern standers or morals.

Maybe some rapists aren’t that bad.

Whos destroying artefacts? This slippery slope argument people are using to defend a statue of a slaver is just laughable

Either the old racist toad goes in a museum explaining his crimes (which local people have tried to do) or blub blub blub in the water he goes
