The politicians may see it as short term but the shady groups behind the movement are moving from country to country trying to enact the same laws

But how does this really help Republicans in the short term? Anyone who supports overturning Roe was NEVER going to vote anything other than Republican to begin with, and there are plenty of more sensible people who may lean that way depending on particular candidates, but will be massively put off by this ruling. Coming into the mid-terms and next Presidential election, they aren't in a spot where they need to be consolidating their base. The base's hatred of Biden has long since accomplished that.

This is a strategy dating back to the Religious Right of the early 1990s. It's pure ideology.
