Current Affairs General US politics (ie, not POTUS related)

Independent from the Democratic Party but not from his political donors. According to his most recent SEC filing only 2% of donations were directly from West Virginians, 98% were out of state donations that probably came from the coal and oil industry. So Manchin likes to pretend to be independent but that’s a lie when he is getting wealthy from the industry that he is protecting. US politicians, except for a few, are too influence by lobbyists thus they can’t really be considered independent. They already have an egenda in mind that protects they interest of their donors at the expense of everyone else.

Btw, sorry for the rant but I’m just so fed up with Manchin and Sinema.

Rant away Sass. Nothing wrong calling a spade a spade.

I see that Biden has said that USA will help Taiwan defence should China attempt to invader them.

That sounds like a suicidal idea.
Let them continue their civil war on their own.

Civil war? Or protecting democracy and an otherwise oppressed and subjugated minority?
Being idealistic is fine but I think we've seen enough of the results of interfering with the politics of independent nations.
Taiwan is the final stronghold of the Chinese nationalists defeated by Mao's communists in the 1940s.
I think the USA should keep out of it for once, it could lead to their destruction.

TBF given what the Chinese state is doing (and has done for years), I fear that failing to draw a line there and defend Taiwan if they attack it would probably result in a far worse outcome for us all.

I disagree there. Taiwan is unfinished business for the PRC.
They have enough commercial power around the world, no need to use military power outside their own back yard.

Your GOT-handle might be accurate.

I don't think letting a bully such as China have their way with Taiwan (or the South China Sea) ever made them content with what they have.
