I dunno what rules I would or wouldn’t impose, but the hurdles are insane. I’ve worked to help a few local MP’s or candidates during campaigns over the years, and I looked into what might be involved to run myself at some point, and it’s almost impossible if you haven’t come up “through the system”. And ridiculously expensive too.

It's a very nepotistic system all ways round really. Len Mclusky tried to combat it a bit, and get more ordinary, working class people involved, but for the most part you need to "pay your dues" to get a look in.

I bet there has been much more misconduct, than the public is aware, by this administration thus the reason why Trump, his children and Giuliani feel so eager to be pardoned even before being charged for a crime.

I sure hope they get charged though, and that it happens after Covid is under control so there is no excuses for them not to be behind bars.

"For “Blue” America: You have the momentum; you are winning the strategic battle. You have marched through the institutions and are closing on Ideological Hegemony. Your enemies are in general retreat. But advances have roused your opponent, and the easy victories are in the past. They now feel Silicon Valley constricting their political oxygen. For some time their leaders seemed uninspired, complacent, sheepishly mumbling lines about tax cuts. But Donald Trump is evidence this has changed. They will fight like people who understand they have everything to lose.

You also hear the clock ticking. Can you wait for victory? Your agenda is pressing: “common sense” gun laws, protecting abortion rights, a real carbon policy, and universal healthcare. Defeating the folks with the guns, senators, and Justices will demand time you don’t have.

But there is also this; why wouldn’t you want the Separation? You are richer, better educated, and younger. You live in places with beaches and work in cool industries. You have Hollywood, Broadway and almost all the best restaurants. You control two-thirds of national GDP. Why wouldn’t you let them go?"

TLDR for most. Link posted for the rest. I say read the whole thing.

Just a quick, not comprehensive response:

Bummer that the author decided to be anonymous. That said, if "letting them go" entailed a full separation then the question could be pondered (and rejected, likely). However, in the proposal, all the costly national programs (defense, SS, health care, etc) remain the burden of the richer blue states to the benefit of the poorer red states. Nationalize cost, regionalize culture - and that's effectively what the Claremont Institute has wanted since its inception.

This article seems to be a cheap form of bothsidesism, in that the claim is both suck and are intractable even if the cultural right a bit less so (odd, in my estimation). Therefore the solution is for the sides, like petulant children, to be separated in a form of time out so they don't start shooting and maybe they'll learn the joys of Federalism (Claremont Institute trademark) and come to like each other again!

Huh?

The concluding comment asking "where are our Lincolns?" was curious given the author's proposition, don't you think?

Hard for me to fully explain how awful the handling of COVID here in Tennessee is right now. The way our state and local politicians are doing things is absolutely unconscionable. As of yesterday, there were less than 10 ICU beds remaining in all of East TN. Meanwhile, there will be a football game played tomorrow that 20k+ people will attend. Then, today I saw this.

On Monday, our local mayor, a US senator, US representative and some lower level state politicians are holding an INDOOR rally to try and keep support alive for Trump’s coup attempt. Also today, our governor announced he was deploying the National Guard to assist hospitals as they become overwhelmed, yet remains steadfastly defiant with regards to doing the most basic thing and issuing a mask mandate.

Your mayor is Kane?

Sorry, I know I should be paying attention to the more important things you've posted. But I've become somewhat numb to awful politicians doing horrendously stupid things and so the fact you have a 7 foot ex-pro wrestler as your mayor is what has really cut through.

Yep, that’s our mayor. I’ve met him a number of times, and he’s actually a pretty down to earth guy, but I’ve been beyond disappointed with his handling of COVID. Anytime the board of health or county/city commissioners meet, he’s the lone dissenting vote on all health and safety measures. He claims to be a Libertarian, and up to this point had done a pretty good job of at least not openly endorsing Trump. For him to be speaking at this rally though is shameful.

Also, it’s cute that you refer to him as an “ex” pro wrestler. Within mere weeks after being elected, he took a week off to travel to Saudi Arabia to wrestle in a PPV. This was in the pretty immediate aftermath of the Jamal Khashoggi murder, when a lot of people were calling for the WWE to cancel the event, so that wasn’t his finest hour either.

Yeah, I still watch wrestling from time to time and those Saudi events were (and continue to be) a pretty grim thing. Especially the one you mention given the timing of it. But loads of money though so who cares hey? He was actually back a couple of weeks ago to say goodbye to his "brother" in full gear.

His covid response sounds pretty awful and this upcoming event sounds like a terrible idea. You'd have thought he would at least be on board with masks having worn one for the better part of 20 years.
