He was trying to get answers out of Trump. Had he stuck to the remit he wold have been batted off with nothing. He had to maintain his stance in order to ask the uncomfortable questions that trump needs to answer. Rather him do that than just be another yes man that trump surrounds himself with.
How else would you suggest people get trump to answer uncomfortable truths that he just avoids or calls fake news?
