episode 2 started off in a better fashion than last week, genuinely interesting, then it headed ff to mereen for more of the witty dwarfs nob jokes, and onwards after that to more murders that don't make sense, losing another of the better cast members, and more gore porn, what on earth are these jokes up to

Which murders didn't make sense?

Ramsey was protecting himself from Bolton's true heir and that Greyjoy nob was killed way earlier - in the same way - in the books.

I'm just disappointed Jaime didn't split that annoying Sparrow in half.

The murder of the babe didn't make sense IMO.
Ramsey has no heir, and little legitimacy, even amongst his own men.
If he was really going to play his father's death off as poison legitimately, keeping the kid alive would have given some seeming of truth to the story.

What's he going to say now?, oops, Dad, stepmother and brother are dead, it was all accidental I swear

Just started to watch game of thrones, very good alround. Like watching Everton in the late eighties, exciting too.

Some interesting remarks made in the conversation between Ramsay, Roose and Lord Karstark, regarding the Manderleys and the Umbers. Last vestiges of the book plotlines being tossed out the window, and IMHO it's not for the better.

Think Ramsay just destroyed the alliance between the Freys & Boltons that was built between his Roose's marriage to Fat Walda.

Perhaps the beginning of the end for the Bolton's grip on the North?

Just in time for Sansa to rally an army & take it all back.

Admittedly this is late-period GoT, so it could easily be as you say, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that this is a lot closer to where the books look to be heading - albeit with Karstark taking the role of Wyman Manderly in the books, playing a long game to get rid of the Boltons; certainly he didn't look at all surprised at what happened and just before then had a particularly unconvincing little speech about how he would never ever think of dealing with the Starks ever again, and how the Boltons should certainly take an action which (as Roose said) would lead to every family in the north turning against them.

Actually I enjoyed this episode. With a few exceptions.
Roose Bolton gets killed off way too easily. He is a smart man who is aware of Ramsays madness and can't expect him to be happy about his new brother. And the resurrection scene - meh. Expected something better for that. Greyjoys - glad something happening there, hope the Ironborn get more screentime now.

I think the writers did the right thing and covered the storylines more indepth. There is still too many storylines going on (I expect to see some merged now) but each scene they covered progressed characterisation , added back story as well as moving the plot forward.
There was actually depth to the characters instead of just a weekly update where the peeps are at.
