Game Of Thrones: Season 8

I’ve watched watched the entire series from season 1, episode 1 to the season 8 finale over the last 6 weeks or so.

As far as I’m concerned, Dany’s decent to mad Queen was expected and pretty obvious. I mean, the symbolism of her character throughout the entire series is one of violence - emerging from flames, leading armies, flambé-ing everyone who got in her way. Not to mention all the talk from other characters about Targaryans being unstable etc. Even before I ever saw one episode, I had the impression she was a villain.

I can’t believe people are actually saying her actions in the last couple of episodes were out of character. They just weren’t. Her season 8 decent was rushed, but it wasn’t out of character.

The finale was a real damp squib after the battle of Winterfell and the massacre of Kings Landing episodes. Bran being made the King is logical but very boring. Although it is the only ending that really brings about any closure. You could see Bran and his council bringing about an Age of Enlightenment.

Tyrian deciding the future of the throne while supposedly being Grey Worms prisoner was extremely contrived and convenient.

Sansa and Arya got suitable endings, Jon’s ending was extremely unsatisfying.

Bran hasn’t cared about anything since becoming the 3-eyed Raven ages ago. But now he actually wants to be king “Thats why I’m here” - doesn’t ring true.

Was it though, I mean she massacred tyrants and people who lived through persecution. She never butchered innocent women and children.

But, like you’ve said it was rushed, I could have accepted that if the story had been played out over a series. A slow decline with questionable decisions. Instead the bells rang and she went bat [Poor language removed] crazy...,bizarre

I suspect Tyrion's presence as prisoner was demanded by the council of the lords of Westeros. Prisoner or not he was still one of the nobles and I'm sure they could dnand his presence.

What didn't ring true to me was every lord asserting to Brann apart from Sansa who said the North should be independent. Independent from what? King Brann Stark? That was just her grab for power and I don't see why the other lords didn't stand and say - oh in that case we'll be independent too!

A more satisfactory, logical outcome would have been if Brann rules Westeros from the north as his seat of power, especially as kings landing had been mushed into dust.

Dany had enough motive to do what she did with the death of one of her Dragons and the execution of her best mate by Cersei, she was consumed by revenge and with that brought rage, I think the whole plot line leading to snow killing her was plausible and well done to be fair, he had to off her after her speech about Winterfell being next.

Arya was criminally under used, there have been loads of back story dedicated to her, she should have put her assassin training to use and confronted Cersei and Jamie, killing Jamie to get to Cersei, keeping the poetic narrative of them dying together, at the hand of Arya, that was the meaty story ending her character deserved, revenge on the remaining Lannister’s for the public beheading of her father all those years ago.

And those last two episodes should have taken 5 to play out, the amount crammed in at the end was stupid.

She had though, deliberately (Mirri Maz Duur in s1) and accidentally (the goatherd's daughter in s4 or s5). There are scenes from s2 where her state of mind is clearly revealed as well, none better than this:

Just watched series 8

first two episodes where dull as hell, crap reunion show

fight at winterfell full of stupid and weird tactics

By the final episode it felt very much like something I was obliged to watch, and after the excellence of the first 5 series what an incredible dive it has took to get to this utter dirge, like a deliberate action to kill off everyone else to ensure in the final episode only the weakest characters and worst actors are still around.

I think we can all agree on what I said many years ago, Stannis is the one true king and westeros and tv entertainment would have been better for it

What use was Bran exactly? He’s never used his abilities to affect anything.

- Got the 3 eyed raven killed
- Got Hodor killed after also ruining his life with a mental disability
- Sam found out about Jon’s heritage so he wasn’t needed for that
- Used as bait for the Night King but the Night King was going to Winterfell anyway

He’s literally affected no part of the story.
he is basically lenard nimoy in the simpsons monorail episode

Arya did get to kill the night king though. A character she had never had any interaction with up until the moment she stuck him with a dagger. At least our expectations were subverted though right?

At least we have the memes.

Imagine just killing the night king, then remembering you cracked one of with Gendry thinking there would be zero embarrassment because you were going to killed anyway.

Bad luck Arya.

“Eh I might hop on a ship”.

I still dont see how this is the same. He's sneering at her and not giving her what she wants. I think everyone can agree she snaps in those situations and has done throughout the series.

When the bells had rung at Kings Landing and she'd all but defeated the enemy. Instead of going for Cersei, the main opponent, she decided to burn innocent children who had never insulted or wronged her in her life.

On reflection Danerys going mad was the best twist in the whole series, people think there was no build up to it, thing is it wasn’t obvious and it was subtle but looking back you can identify it, no one had a scooby of course, myself included.

People talk about character build up and pacing, in reality the beauty of what thrones always did well. Is that anything, could happen to anyone at any time and it did up until the end.

Another aspect I liked was that nothing was fair, John should have been King, nope. Danerys could have been queen, nope. They both live happily ever after, nope. Give it a randomer. And it ends poorly for the main hero’s, you were pulled into likening. Thrones gave us what, thrones is. Innocent, evil, fair, unfair, tied up, loose ending it plays on your own concepts of these thing and your loyalty to characters.

It’s also not the end in my opinion, the whole thing is set up to come back in a few years. Someone, maybe Robyn Arran, knocks of Bran, Sansa goes ballistic, war happens, Arya returns, Gendry stakes a claim, the Iron Born get up to shenanigans, Dorn pushes an angle, Bronn gets in the mix. Tyrion head north to find John, Drogon turn up , up there. Your all hooked again.

In between, we will have the next book/s.

But she'd quite clearly stated that her enemies saw using a shield of innocents as a way of exploiting what they felt was her weakness...mercy. Then throughout the episodes previous to that she has criticised the people of Kings Landing for not rising against their tyrant, said her only tool to rule the Seven Kingdoms was fear and also explicitly stated that she is willing to sacrifice innocents so that future generations will be free. Other characters have also stated that they fear she will destroy the Red Keep regardless of the innocents within.

Nearly her entire Essos plotline is lesson after lesson that mercy leads to further violence and betrayal. It was even foreshadowed with her innocent unborn child being killed....an act justified by Mirri Maz Duur as it meant future generations would not suffer under The Stallion Who Mounts The World.

It's not a crazy about turn into sudden madness but, in her mind, a gradual realisation of what is necessary brought sharply into focus by the sight of what was taken from her family. She's always being told about the love the people have for the Targaryens but she is not welcomed into Westeros as the liberator and beloved rightful heir. She's a foreign invader and all she has is force.

He didn't mean he was there because he WANTED to be king. He meant he was there because he already knew it was going to happen...

Whether he wanted it or not was immaterial. It was going to happen. You can't want or not want anything when time is played out for you as one big flat plan. It's a redundant concept

That's why it DID ring true

Calvin's theory of predestination!! On the other hand I prefer Aquinas' theory on free will.

Very interesting and deep philosophical points being raised by GOT in spite of the unseemly rush to conclusion of events in s8.

That is what I liked about the last episode because it felt a lot more like the series we were watching at the beginning.

To me it seems like as the show got more popular there was a desire from many fans to have good beat evil and favourite characters rise to the top, get revenge and the unlikable ones to get dealt with. It's been done so many times in series before so watching GOT from the start and seeing the shocks and favourite characters ruthlessly killed was something unique to watch.

I'm glad they didn't just give some fans what they wanted, Jon Snow and Danerys ruling happily ever after.

Things could have been done better in that last episode, a lot of unexplained developments again, but I quite liked how they ended it personally.
