I think the darkness was perfect. You never get shown the size of the dead army, all you see is the constant dead pouring in with no end in sight. The gradual building of hopelessness as the main characters become surroundes makes it so tense.
Never thought the entombed in the crypt would burst out, making that one safe haven not so safe.
I just loved how it makes the viewer think there's no way of surviving. The dragons wounded, dead everywhere, reraised dead making it worse.
We've known from season 1 the best way to take out a white walker is with a surprise attack. Especially for the night king who seems to be stronger still, it made sense.
Now Winterfell is in ruins, barely any men left, Jon's claim unresolved with Dany, and Cersei still has her armies + the golden company.
