Haven’t read the books myself but I can’t really see where we go with him. He bigger himself up as the Night King’s true target in Episode 2 but now they’re all seemingly dead... maybe we can just stick him in a tree and forget about him

From day 1 he could have done

Superb episode - but i'd put it more down to the suspense, darkness & music than the actual narrative. I was expecting shock deaths, deaths completely out of nowhere for the major characters. But it turns out - all of the predictable folk & fringe characters die, and all major ones are fine.

Firstly from a tactical point of view, it's 2 vs 1 dragons and yet both of them nearly die.
Sam was completely pointless in this episode. Grow some balls.
Tyrion was quite disappointing, I thought he'd have his hero moment - but the whole crypt scene just wasn't all there.

Ayra throughout was great in all scenes - She's went from little girl, into a killer, into a woman, then they showed her vunerable side before killing the night king. All superbly done in the suspense...However over extremely quickly. I thought there'd be a little bit more context added to the whole Night King vs Three eyed raven, but unfortunately no. I get that its all about the throne - but at the end of the day this has been building since episode one, so for it to be over so quickly was disappointing.

Also...

Given that there were no major deaths, i'm fully expecting Bronn to kill one or both of the Lannisters completely unexpectedly in the next episode.

Brilliant spectacle (minus the lighting) but I was disappointed in the narrative. The last three episodes have to do something special to rescue the conclusion to what has been my favourite show the last decade. I must stress this is all my opinion and speculation, but I've always felt that the show-runners really didn't give a damn about the WW and some of Martin's much more detailed and expanded mythology and I think that shows in this episode. Believe me I'm not one of those people who loves the books ( only read the first two) but I can't believe that this is how he's going to end the narrative in his books. Hopefully there are more twists and turns to come and I'm made to eat my words here. Some of the things characters did in this episode where just absolutely bonkers as well case in points being

Dany landing her dragon forcing Jorah to come rescue her and subsequently die. Jon squaring up to the ice dragon. Samwell Tarly the entire episode...just [Poor language removed] that guy. Also the disdain the show-runners have for Ghost is ridiculous. "[/SPOILER]

Also the director and show-runners said Helm's Deep was the benchmark... I think they fell short of that. In Helm's Deep you could at least see what was going on the majority of the time.
My main criticism as someone who hasn’t read the books, is how much about the Night King/WW is left unanswered.
Are they going to leave his motives a mystery? Because I expect they’ll move on quickly from him in the remaining episodes...

Heard a few people mentioning Melisandre’s prophecy regarding Arya. The brown, green and blue eyes thing.

In the show, as s child, she was told by a witch that she would marry a king (Robert Baratheon), her kids would die and that a younger, more beautiful Queen would defeat her. Probably Dany but guess it could have been Margaery.

In the books there is another part to the prophecy that her little brother will kill her. This could be Jaime, Tyrion or possibly Arya with a mask. However given it wasn't in the show then it could just be ignored.

Their motive was to bring about the endless night.
