Current Affairs Free Speech

Free speech is far too often conflated with freedom from consequences. Piers is binned - rightly so - for airing his abhorrent views on a national platform, then cries about being cancelled. On a global platform. Then loads of his racists mates with their global platforms join in. But yeah, cancelled...

The issue is that far too many people act like there are shades of grey when it comes to the right to equality of women, POC, LGBTQ+ people and any other marginalised members of society - There isn’t. If you don’t support all of these people in their ongoing struggles for equality you’re wrong and that is very much that.

Absolute nonsense.

Should I support this and if I don't I'm wrong then?

Behave. What you've just posted is cut and dry extremism. Dealing with absolutes. Everything "woke" is criticised for.

Obviously, the example you have posted is both extreme and ridiculous; I wouldn't use it to generalize to people on the internet who want to speak out against racism, sexism, classism.

Free speech is not under attack.

I zone out anytime I hear the words woke, snowflake, cancel culture, triggered etc.

Same on the other side when I hear gammon or Karen.

What’s happening at the moment is we have two sides run by not very intelligent people being played by the media to push an agenda of a culture war and to eventually turn everyone against eachother.

As with a lot of things these days it’s only the extremes that get coverage whilst everyone in the middle ground losses out.

Agreed however us Centrists get laughed out the room for being "limp wristed" and "on the fence".

Those actions? No. That looks like performative nonsense to me. I didn’t say you had to agree with everything done and said in the name of equality for those marginalised people, just that you should agree with the concept.

What happens a lot though, as illustrated here, is people who would rather not admit their prejudice(s) outright will enter into a game of Whataboutery, citing extreme examples of “wokeness” as the norm and therefore a reason to be contrary.

BTW only the Sith deal in absolutes.

I'm prejudiced?

Nah, I'm just going to challenge people on their views instead of be on bended knee and accept everything someone says because of the gender or skin colour of the person saying it.

What you are saying isn't reasonable. It's extremist.

How is it extreme to suggest that every human should be considered equal?

The very fact you consider that an extreme POV suggests you are prejudiced but - in fairness - I’m basing that assumption from a few posts on a footy forum so I apologise for jumping to a conclusion.

It was the first example I thought of as in the news today.

How abou a very common refrain - the 'gender pay gap' - 'women are paid less than men for the same job!'

No they aren't. That's literally illegal.

Or 'Britain is more racist now than the 70s/80s' - we objectively aren't.

Or 'trans women are women' - no they biologically aren't.

By your logic - where in your words there's no 'shades of grey' - I should blindly accept those things as true, solely because it's in pursuit of equality. If I don't, I'm a misogynist, racist, transphobe and so on.

No. The reason you thought I was 'prejudiced' was because of your own issue in not seeing that there very much is shades of grey in this debate, being that there's not one way to seek to equality. I think BLM does the opposite of seeking equality - it actually creates racial division. That doesn't make me prejudiced, because overall obviously there is racial disparity in the UK. It just means I see different ways of redressing it.

Is it under threat?
I hear those nasty Leftie snowflakes want it abolished to save them hearing the truth and are cancelling people like that nice Mr Mumford chap, whose only crime is playing the Banjo.
Then again
The Right have the Press and the Media sealed up and if you disagree with their narrative then you are "cancelled".

Who is coming after my free speech? and why?

Does "Free Speech" even exist?

I think social media has a lot to answer for. There is no more reasoned debate, you’re either right or left, A or B... no middle ground and nobody willing to keep an open mind and listen to opinions that may differ from their own. The “cancel culture” you mention is vile and is the reason our society is so divided.

Jeez, I must be getting old...

I'm agreeing with Tubey's posts more and more in recent times...

What's happening to me??? :D
