After those first 3 games I thought 7th would be realistic. After our great start to the first half of the season and sitting in 4th place I changed my expectations to a minimum of 5th, since the game at anfield to now, I think 5th place is a push, we can do it but we have made hard work of this. Like I said in another thread, we need to now go on an unbeaten run.

Having been in the chase for fourth all season, while United and Spurs have stuttered, I'd be very disappointed if they both stayed above us. I could stomach finishing sixth, given that Rooney has been one of the players of the season and they have other quality players such as Van Persie, Mata and Janujaz but Spurs have been poor and have been fortunate to win quite a few of their games.

7th is pretty much a custom made ending for Everton it seems like the last few years,I said 8th at the start of the season-4th for me was never ever on even after a decent run at times,it just kept us high up when we had our little bad run,and considering so many doom and gloom merchants had us finishing a lot lower because of were Martinez ended with his previous team,I think they must be happy even if our performances and results have not earned us what we deserved. still think we might get slightly higher.

Wouldn't of taken 7th at the start of the season would definitely not be happy with it now, 6th would be OK as if City win the COC it gets Europa League, 5th should be the minimum target though still.

Agree with this. Ultimately it proves that you can play football in any fashion you want and achieve precisely what's previously been achieved because nothing has changed off the pitch.

That said, we are a more substantial football playing outfit now and will get better at this system as time goes on if we get key additions for the final third of the pitch. I think under Martinez we can challenge for 5th/6th rather than the 6th/7th/8th under Moyes, purely because Martinez will go for it in tight situations.

Think the bolded bit will really help in the cups.

I agree with you that with Martinez we will be challenging for a slightly higher position in the league although the whole bolded bit might mean more volatilty on top of the fine margins that already decide games and seasons.

Ie if our average under Moyes was 7th +/- one or two places think the average for Martinez might be 6th +/- two or three places.

Hope that makes sense!

Yes, it does. You may be right and I hope you are, because the volaitility will at least see us knocking on the door seriously at some point.

Martinez is a very very good manager. Something will happen if he's here for any decent length of time. Even if he's just given a sell to buy policy to get on with (and every penny taken in is re-spent), he'll achieve something for us. Let's put it this way: when his CV is finally complete when he retires, it wont just have that FA Cup win on it. He's going to win stuff and hopefully he takes us with him for some of them.

If viewing from the beginning of the season, 7th is a fine finish with the changes made.

However, each season and transfer window presents opportunities and we're not taking them. In that respect, it's a bit disappointing.

Agree and If all goes well I think the next line on his CV will have Barca on it. Hopefully in quite a few years and in the meantime they test him out by selling/loaning players to see how well he handles them.

Personally I feel like this was the time to spend big in January because this season all the top sides have been dropping points and Manchester united haven't been dominant. This is probably the best chance were going to have at a top 4 place for awhile as Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man city are definitely going to improve Manchester United surely cant get to much worse only better same as spurs I feels like we could get left behind.

But I am inevitably wrong about most things so I hope this is the case to :) but to answer your question I think finishing 7th at the start of the year I would have been quite okay with that with a new manager and a few new players joining but after the start we had I think it is going to be a disappointment overall unless Martinez delivers the F.A. cup which would make this season a mammoth one.

As said given the start very disappointing my worry is the 1st half was a fluke and now is the reality, poor player trying to play fancy football, proof in the pudding being the massive lack of chances created, been harping on about this for a while now, but our 'worldie' goals to regular goals ratio will be phenomenal, for this season. A team can't get by on that, looking back at our last away win Swansea, Coleman and Barkley with the goals, Followed by Coleman V Southmpton, followed by Barry and Mirrallas V Norwich and a again Mirallas V Villa. Thats our last 4 wins listed stretching all the way back to the 22nd december, its so so poor. Time will tell, lets see if we can win these next 3 home league games possibly 4 if Palace is re-scheduled. But for me we are all fir coat with no knickers and aging squad, players on loan and a board notorious with not having any sort of Net spend Facts are Facts.

But hey we did have 53% possession away at Chelsea.

Worth noting that in certain aspects non of this is new, we played decent football at times last season, think of the Chances we created V Fulham and other teams that we just didn't put away, the other similarity to last season is our poor away form after Xmas last season we won at Newcastle on Around the 3rd of Jan then we didn't win away again until the start of this season.
