Financial spending in England

To be fair, the lens chat is probably the most productive and civilised conversation anyone's ever had in the everton forum.

Largely because neither me nor brennan were involved like.

Nice thread, would read again.

Where did Bradford finish on this table, out of curiosity? They did alright in a cup competition this year like.

Do you maybe mean Bradford?
But I don't think either Barnsley or Bradford would appear since the table is only looking at teams in the Premier league

I did mean Bradford haha no idea why I wrote Barnsley.

I know they won't be on here, it was just a little dig at our cup run (y)

I agree with the poster that said that most people are just bored.
People are saying, 'Oh we didn't know who Moyes was and we didn't appoint him in 2001, so by that account a new unknown will boost us to a higher place', please-- we almost ended up with Megson.
Also- for those saying why are we looking at 90s, lets look at the 80s- correct me if I'm wrong but weren't we stumbling at the final hurdle quite often then too?
Yes I know we were the absolute best, i know, but if I'm not mistaken Everton are sitting quite impressively high on the runners-up table in the history of FA and league cup competitions?

To say most are bored is a misjudgement of the situation IMO. Most people recognize that winning trophies is the ultimate goal in football. It's obvious that this guy won't get us close.

Personally I want to see us lifting a couple of cups at Wembley before I die so I've got something to look back on when I'm on my way out. I've never lied in bed at night romanticising 7th in quite the same way way.

The next guy won't guarantee a trophy either just that this guy guarantee's you won't get that. Bored isn't really an issue for me.

Few points:

1. Five of the clubs we did outspend won trophies in this time (blackburn, boro, pompey, swansea and birmingham) and a sixth (wigan) have given themselves a damned good chance. Our cup performances have been under par compared by our league performances by anyone's standards.

2. We've had a situation which allows us to financially overachieve, which is that every player at the club has been bought in and offered contracts by Moyes and his staff so there are no players from previous regimes hanging around on big wages and not fitting into the plans. We're mostly very effecient at only bringing in players we'll use. That's one of the reasons so many of the other clubs are wasting a lot of money we ain't and that well run clubs like swansea find it so easy to outperform them.

3. The idea that we'd possibly be better off if Moyes had been sacked after his 2nd season when he finished 17th is insane. I've ran out of patience with the guy but what he did to get us 4th the season after is extraordinary.

4. In fact, the quality of the team Moyes has produced on his budget is extraordinary, he deserves (and gets) a lot of credit for that. There's very few managers in the english game to do so well in the transfer market for such a prolonged period of time in the modern era. However if he can't win trophies with that team no matter how favourable the draw then what's the point? What does having that team gain us?

5. He's still on far too much money and too arrogant about putting himself before the club but our board have had to give way on that because he's shielded them from criticism so effectively that most people wouldn't guess we were being outspent by 13 of the 19 other league teams if you asked them.

Good, fair analysis in the OP.

I think it would be hard for even the most anti-Moyes fan to not recognise that he punches above his weight over the course of 38 league games, because he is able to spot good upcoming and bargain players.

However his underperformance in cups, and other criticisms of him and especially his relationship with Kenwright are still valid.

Admittedly those benfits have come at a cost, namely Moyes is massively overpayed
Is he? I asked this in another thread but don't think anyone took the bait. As best I can tell (I'd welcome updated numbers since what I found was from two years ago) we are around 20-25th in wages in the whole of world football. According to a list I found from Nov of 2012 Moyes is the 16th best paid manager in world football. So how would that make him massively overpaid? He is perhaps slightly overpaid relative to what we spend on players.

I think part of this is that nobody thinks of us as being a top 25 club in wages but thanks to the insanity of the Prem we spend more on wages than many teams which finish comfortably in CL spots in other leagues.

Sadly something like 50% of the teams above us in wages are in the Prem which might explain why we don't think of ourselves as big spenders.
