Sell Fellaini, buy Moutinho.

I would be very happy with this, although it would leave us with a very small midfield

I agree. I'm sick of opposition fans calling him an attacking midfielder when clearly he's somewhat a defensive midfielder/ball winner at first, he's shown how good he can be in that position countless times but often ended up with a lengthy injury whilst hitting top form. You really won't give this up, will you?
One great ACM performance against Man U doesn't make that his better role. His previous stormers all came in deeper roles, chiefly the one against Man City which I think was his best performance. He dominated their players and turned possession over to us -- that's what I think he's best at. Not an orthodox, deep-lying DM, no. But a ball winner in the centre and perhaps a box-to-box guy, which is a term I hate admittedly but it suits Fellaini's myriad of skills.
I can't be arsed getting the stats but when you argued this point last someone copied the thing off an EB report which showed he was a cut above all the other highly rated defensive midfielders. He is great in that role. He doesn't have the shooting ability or vision to be a top class ACM.
Giving away fouls isn't so much a bad thing though, as it's a by-product of his pressing. As for being dispossessed I'm not sure as I don't have the stats. If anyone can unearth them that would be great. All I can recall is him having the best percentages in numerous key areas.
As for tracking runners that is subjective and an opinion you have that is cast iron. You won't change it -- I don't agree with it. I don't think he's immense at it but you definitely exaggerate the problem.
And no his poor games in that position don't outweigh the good ones. That would mean most of his games for us since his first season have been poor games, which is a flat out lie. It's actually a laughable assertion.
Moyes isn't really an expert on players' best positions as Coleman isn't a right mid, Lescott was a LB for ages, Cahill has been used as a striker often willingly, Osman has spent his entire career in every position but his best one... etc. Moyes has used Fellaini mostly in the deeper role as well, so the fact that he's using him further up 3 games into this season doesn't exactly mean Moyes believes that's his best position -- you're making a massive leap there. Personally I think it he played him there to exploit a weak United defence and a weak Villa defence -- which he did. He was pretty crap against a well-organised West Brom defence though. It was possibly his most ineffective performance since he became a key player for us.
And Gibson isn't the same type of player. Although I would personally put Fellaini in there alongside maybe Osman, that's irrelevant as the worry from the fans hasn't been because of what options Moyes now has, but the choices Moyes will now make. I'm fearful because it pretty much guarantees Neville's spot in CM, and I don't like Neville as a midfielder in 2012. He really is a completely different player to Gibson though, and your last few sentences are confusing because of that. Do you not see that Fellaini in a deeper role plays a completely different role than Gibson?
Oh yeah, that moron David Moyes doesn't have a clue about putting players in their correct position. Didn't Lescott get about 9 goals in a season (Cahill territory) whilst playing left back? Coleman will get raped if we ever have the misfortune of playing him at right back!
http://www1.skysports.com/football/...says-this-could-be-his-last-season-at-EvertonAssuming this isn't Moyes' last season here, too.If this has any legs then Moyes will know how to spend the money properly to get the right players in - plus he'll have time to sort it out (so it won't be a Carroll-like panic buy).
